Apple expected to announce iPods with new features

1 September 2007 7:19 by Rich "vurbal" Fiscus | 13 comments

Apple expected to announce iPods with new features Next week Apple is expectd to introduce new versions of the industry leading iPod mobile media players.

According to analysts this move is a sign that the company is concentrating on its core business, and hasn't gotten too distracted with the amount of buzz the iPhone's release generated earlier this year.

This follows last month's announcement of an updated iMac desktop computer, adding features and introducing lower priced models.

Apple, in an emailed invitation, would only reveal that it has scheduled the media event for Wednesday in San Francisco.

According to Goldman Sachs analyst David Bailey -- and several Apple fan sites -- the new iPods would be the first to be based on a version of Apple's homegrown computer operating system. They will be about an inch shorter and will be capable of storing more digital media, according to Apple fan sites.

One major source of speculation is whether there will be new models introduced with touch screen technology - similar to the screens on iPhones.

I'm definitely getting an 80GB 5th Generation iPod when these release. Cheap iPod FTW.

Yeah it sucks because you pay $300 for an ipod and then 2 years later they release a new one so i'll probably skip this gen and wait for the next one.

I got a 30GB video last Christmas. It was expensive, but it was well worth it. I've watched The Godfather Trilogy, Scarface at least 4 times, most South Park episodes from seasons 1 through 10, Borat, The Simpsons Mov... I mean seasons... Plus about 500 songs and some games, and RockBox with Doom and so on. I'm up to about 22GBs of memory in use. I think it's time for a new one :)

Besides, I'll just sell this one on eBay. It's in perfect condition with no scratches on the front and maybe a few on the back... and a dent that is barely noticeable. I dropped it on the edge of my bed frame when I was cleaning it from fingerprints :(

Well if you got it last christmas as a gift instead of you paying it with your own money then i guess you could get this one. Cause on ebay you could probably make 150 selling your old one and then you'd need an extra 100 or more in a few monthes depending on which model.

So does this mean they will get somewhat closer to being able to actually justify the several hundred price tag for a $50 MP3 player core with a screen and HDD?

I don't understand what you're saying but rumor has it that these new ipods won't have hdds, they'll use flash memory.

I was meaning that right now they cost an arm and a leg for basically a combination of a $50 MP3 player as a base core with an added clickwheel, HDD, and screen.

Oh alright, yah you could get the same mp3 player for cheaper but everybody wants an ipod because they are popular and cool looking, so i guess apple decides to overprice the a little.

Actually, that screen is only if you buy the more expensive video Ipods because the standard ones are just a little B&W thing.
