HD DVD talks big game at CEDIA

6 September 2007 11:42 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 29 comments

HD DVD talks big game at CEDIA The HD DVD camp is putting on a smile at the current CEDIA and is more than happy to point out all the advantages that they hope will help them win the next-gen format war.

According to the HD DVD Promotional Group, despite lagging in disc sales and overall players (PlayStation 3 included), four of the top five PC notebook manufacturers are in support of HD DVD. Additionally, the group believes third generation players coming soon from Toshiba will give the format "undeniable momentum" going into the holiday season.

And they do have a point. The new high-end HD-A35, which will be released at $499 USD, will be as expensive as the lowest priced Blu-ray standalone player, the low-end Sony BDP-S300. There has even been reports that a Canadian manufacturer will begin selling $199 USD low-end HD DVD players before the holidays.

To help gain added momentum, HD DVD has recently signed a marketing agreement with NBC Universal which will place 30 second ads promoting the format on air during the very popular "Sunday Night Football" broadcasts.

The group also said 125 new titles were planned for the fourth quarter of 2007 and that it would be offering a firmware update to all second-generation player owners that would give them 1080/24p capabilities.

It's about time HD-DVD made some noise over Blu-Ray.BIG it UP!
All I ever seem to hear from Blu-Ray is how they've won and HD-DVD will be dead within 18 months.
    FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT....

    - Actually Acer have 3 models with HD DVD drives included in them out right now, they have in fact been making HD DVD notepad/laptops for some time.
They have no equivalent Blu-ray products yet.

    Yeah right. As if.
......and anyways we know that relatively speaking PS3s just don't shift many Blu-ray movies, bring it on.
I'm looking forward to the (real) numbers (they should make amusing reading).

Anyway you could just use the graph Sony themselves revealed at CEDIA yesterday (tellingly using dates only to mid may 2007......we already know from Amazon that HD DVD sales have been rising - even in Japan - and closing on BD sales numbers).
    Talk about unstable and unimpressive.

Why can't we all just get along. Blu-ray and hd dvd should merge and make everyone happy. Only in a utopian society.

I would be interested to see how many posts are contributed to this format war or AD would be nothing more than just "helping people with their computer problems"

I can't personally say much because Im not a first gen buyer. I'm like 80 percent of all those who are waiting for the real thing.

    - LMAO.

    (trying to take this OT?)

    Yeah, of course.

Pointing out reality is (to the Sony/PS3/BD fanclub) "hate".

It can only be "hate" to counter the huge volumes of half-truth and outright lies (invariably slamming HD DVD) that the BD side have been spewing out in this so-called 'format war'?

It must only be "hate" to recognise the problems Blu-ray's additional (compared to HD DVD) DRM (particularly BD+) is going to cause so many people and the attack on the sharing community that Blu-ray embodies.

It seems you think it's "hate" to comment on the built-in obsolescense the current 'profile 1.0' Blu-ray players on sale atm all have.

It would appear that it's "hate" (to you) to comment on the anti-consumer intent behind the entire Blu-ray project
(specifically designed to give 'the industry' back the profit margins they used to enjoy when DVD first appeared).

Naaaaa, some of you guys can go along with your loopy ideas of 'love' or 'hate' for a CE corperation if you like, I'll weight each new format on it's merits and comment on it as I see fit.

Use the new dynamic graphs and you'll see after the Amazon HD disk sale, HD-DVD has drop straight back to it's 30% again, Blu-Ray has kept it's 60% market share.

There was 6.6million sold as said by Sony about 2 months ago, I'd say that's gone up to 7 million now.

People buy Blu-Rays for their PS3's some places only sell the PS3 as a blu-ray player they don't stock games as they aren't interested in the games look around the high end video shops.

We have 10 Blu-Rays here with the PS3, I've seen some people with over 100Blu-rays and only own a PS3.

PS3 is a really good Blu-ray player, HD video + 7.1 surround sound 174khrz audio output.

Great point the PS3 is a multimedia console & is a high end BD player but also has a DVD up scaler(firmware 1.90) thats better than some DVD standalone up scaler on the market right now.Let not forget that you can put your audio on there also & does a great job of up scaling your music tracks to AAC,MP3,or ATRAC which ever you choose. There are a lot of reason why someone would invest there money into a PS3 before buying a standalone...I own 56 BD titles & still growing & have no interest in buying a standalone from BD until there standalone prices are really cheap.

So how much for the drive parts itself if a whole unit is 200,the is it reasonable MS could toss a HDVD drive into a 360 elite and sale it for the same price in the coming 2 years?

Microsoft is way to short sighted for that. They want you to buy everything NOW and they want the money NOW. 2 years from now the Xbox 720 will be out, have 3 different versions and still overheat. They don't build anything for the long run. Nothing.

Are you kidding they are taking the upgrades path to the 360, well upgrades path from a unit perspective, I would be surprised if they did so in a couple years.

Even so HDVD gaming is not in the cards, but building a 360 is always the joker.....

    wha?

Look what happens,it turns into a console fight.
    BIG YAWN!
Last gen it was the PS2 that suffered reliability problems with lasers and the old Xbox was quite solid. So raving about Sony being
reliable is ignorant of the past.
I think Sony have truly screwed up this time round with both it's console and it's Blu-Ray format and that's why they are scraping the barrel this time round. All I hear is how the future will turn all rosy but thats corporate BS at it's best.
    I don't want a dual player either,screw Blu-Ray,I don't wan't their shite proprietry format increasing the cost.
I hope HD-DVD squashes Sony's plans once and for all.
I don't hate Sony though, just their arrogance and blatant lies.

SOLID? IT HAD HEATING ISSUES FOR CHRIST SAKE,caps LOL

Come on man the PS2 had issues sure but so did the Xbox and its worst issue was lack of games, now its somewhat the reverse the 360 has "some" games and more hardware issues, so please keep the fanboy vitriol to yourself.

BR would be nice if the price was lower and they drooped BD+ BS, HDVD is ok but in the long the long run probably not enough, I think HDVD is shifting to become the temporary Hdef for amt for the next 4ish years before something comes along to replace it.

Either HDvd "wins" or BR and HDVD share the market in a full developed dual player world.

BR still has a chance drop the stupid BD+ and get to the cost issues but I dont see them thinking that "price" is the problem, its a value as 4X the cost or so sony says...

    Who's fighting?
He asked a question about adding HD DVD to the 360. I stated an opinion about Microsoft to answer his inquiry. He retorted and said nothing about Sony at all. It's not our fault that the 360 just happens to be a game console.
You’re the one that turned this into a console fight. I didn't tell him Sony is great... I said Microsoft sucks. ALL of Microsoft.

And if you think HD DVD or Blue Ray is going to win this “war” your just as short sighted as Microsoft. New companies are just starting to make themselves known and sooner than later they will take control of everything and both formats will be $#!t out of luck.

So follow the fanboys off the cliff like a good lil lemming, if you want to poke holes in the other side try a more balanced apporch like the Xbox looked good but had a handful of games compared to the PS2 that had a lot of games and only a handful of a good ones, lets not forget the GC that was the cheapest and had even less games than the Xbox :P

But ya keeping to topic makes the mods happy so lets keep the mods happy *runs from lighting*
I do not want to see the lliigghhttttt........ing....

    ZOMG!
    nonsense is fun ^^

Anyway Hdvd is gaining ground but this is just another tit for tat in a long drawn out format war,Sony is stupid for pushing the PS3 over 400,at 500 I can see it just for the better build quality, but holy fck sony is dead in the water if they do not start effecting price changes, if they had the balls to take a few billion in debt up front and sold the PS3 for 450 it'd be a whole new ball game..

I edited a bit too late but yes, no sense is nonsense but there is no
sense in spreading grammatical nonsense right now...err!
Sony should of sold the PS3 for the same price as Wii securing a Blu-Ray and console win in one go.Yes it would of been the greatest financial risk but it had the best chances of killing two birds with one stone and would reap the rewards twofold.
Bit late for that now though so HD-DVD for the win... :P

that makes as much sense as MS selling the 360 for 100 in order to secure its future....please tone down the vitriol just a bit more :P

If the PS3 sold for 400(a max of 600USD world wide) I could see it selling 6 maybe 8 million units by now, and would have built a solid foundation for both BR and the PS3 have been damaged buy its "value" pricing.

We can agree on one thing, sonys gone loco.....without a a hard price drop the PS3 is the new...well....Xbox LOL while the WII takes the PS2 slot and the 360 gains the 2nd throne the PS3 is the 3rd wheel.

I feel happy that I make some sense to you Zippydoo. It's difficult these days to show my unbiased opinion on matters that are beyond my control but one has to try and remain objective :D
To make any sense of the HD format war is to throw all rationale thought out the window and embrace the chaos that is consumer delusion.I blame THEM,it's not my fault.I'm just caught in that capitalist dream that's supposed to make me feel empowered by the knowledge of those with loadsamoney and a grand plan to keep me running on that treadmill.
    I like my easy-bake 360 deluxe.
Had it since launch and it's still chugging along nicely to
    some quality games.
I may keep it for a while,I may sell it one day,I may replace it with something shinier with promises of next gen joy but I am always a slave to THEM. Bless 'em!

PC gaming with all the DRM problems, hacked games and rampant piracy that dooms the format isn't exactly what consumers or developers want. The constantly changing minimum spec to play new games doesn't help PC gaming either because all that does is minimise sales.
As much as I loved PC gaming 5 years ago,it seems antiquated to me next to the latest games consoles.
Just my opinion though, each to their own and all that!
