Hitachi introduces quad-layer 100 GB Blu-ray Disc

This week at the CEATEC JAPAN 2007 event, Hitachi announced that they had successfully created a quad layer Blu-ray disc that can store up to 100 GB of data.

To sweeten the pot even more, Hitachi says the discs are compatible with existing Blu-ray players and drives after an easy firmware update.

Hitachi says they are now working on "improving the signal quality of its quad-layer technology" so that it can be ready to hit the market soon. The company also boasted that they were working on a eight-layer Blu-ray disc capable of storing 200GB of data.

What is left to be pondered is how expensive these discs will cost to manufacture. Movie studios may just opt to release their titles over two standard Blu-ray discs than invest in new expensive equipment necessary for these larger capacity discs.

This is not the first time recently that we have heard of improved capacity on optical media. In March, New Medium Enterprises developed a four-layer DVD it called the Versatile Multilayer Disc (VMD) that is capable of storing 20GB of data, double the current DVD-9.

HD DVD is also in the process of approving a new triple-layer disc capable of storing 51 GB of data, one GB more than current Blu-ray discs.

Should be interesting to see how these technologies continue to improve as well as manufacturing costs.

How logn ago was it annoucned about this triple HD DVD layer disc? It'll be a logn tiem until they even get this out, besides now you are egttign to the point where these discs are bigger then peoples HDD, mines 500GB but my old pc onyl had 40GB which already is beaten by 50GB from BR, i want to no when we will see blueray and hd dvd hard drives! The future of media is not hard drives, and its definitely not optical media (CD, DVD, HD-DVD, BD). The future is in solid state drives. You are seeing this technology be added to many new laptops. Seek times are much better. There is not moving parts to fail. They are smaller. Think about it they have 6gb Micro SD cards (8gb on the way). Thats nearly the capacity of a Dual Layer DVD on something the size of a finger nail. I am pretty sure they are even up to 32GB on a SD card. [ + quote]

First of all lets see if this is suitable for real-time video playback, cos if it isn't and no TV or movie people use it it's never going to benefit from large scale production & get affordable. These lab photos we see from time to time along with the claims they keep making etc etc are a world away from the process the 51gb TL disc is going through right now (large scale test runs and DVD Forum approval). We know they have problems enough with the 50gb DL BD disc as it is (and they're expensive as hell). Like the 200gb discs I don't exopect to see this in stores anytime soon. [ + quote]

I don't think it's a matter of size or how many gigabites you can store. The higher capacity it has the more hours of work you require to fill it up. Bluray is concentrating more on the capacity when they should really be concentrating more on features, price, and quality of the games/movies. If they were to come up with a 200 gb bluray disc just imagine the how much more time(MONEY) they would need to make use of it all. The game would sell for 100+, I sure wouldn't want to pay that much per game or movie. My two cents. [ + quote]
