Samsung to release Blu-ray player fix for BD+ compatibility

On Friday Samsung is expected to have an important Firmware update available for their Blu-ray players. Both the BD-P1000 and BD-P1200 had problems playing Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer because of it's new BD+ DRM.

According to a statement from the company, �This firmware update will resolve freezing issues experienced when viewing Fox titles and their BD+ features.�

So far, the BD+ compatibility problems with a few players has been the first serious hiccup in player development for Blu-ray or HD DVD. Of course there might well have been earlier issues if enough consumers had bought into next-gen formats that additional standalone models had been designed.

The update can be downloaded directly to the BD-P1200 player through its built in Ethernet port, or it can be loaded the way BD-P1000 owners will have to and burn it to optical media to be loaded from the unit's drive.

Here's hoping every firmware upgrade goes well (cos I have heard of people in the USA taking their players to the shop they bought them from to have it done & the shop having to give them a new one cos the upgrade 'bricked' their player). If ever there was a dumber more useless idea than this constant 'security' upgrading' then I have yet to hear of it. It might be OK for (some of) the more techy-minded (tiny) minority but amongst 'regular' people this 'idea' is a ludicrous disaster waiting to happen. [ + quote]

My friend bricked his Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player while upgrading the firmware. He was downloading the update directly to the player when he forgot to take out a disc in the drive. He had to send the player back to Toshiba to get it fixed. Updating firmware is not for the faint of heart. [ + quote]

So let me get this right...you update the frimware in order to play new dvds,using the manufactures tools and you void the warranty? I would say you should say "whats a firmware, is it tasty?"... [ + quote]

Was told by Samsung rep today that update will not fix problem w ff2, only Day After Tomorrow. Anyone have this experience? She said they are working on a CD that will fix both but not available yet. Anyone have any other info? [ + quote]
