I was just wondering, how many of these units sold are because people who bought PS2's had to buy replacements because their first one broke due to disc read errors etc . . .
All of my mates have gone through at least 1 PS2 due to this problem

Madden 08 is already out. I guess it could last until 2010 since it is still outselling the PS3. Imagine if it outlasts the Xbox360 too after already leaving the original Xbox in the dust.

If they are continuing to develop games for the PS2 thats good news. It shows how much of a solid system it is. For once its nice to see a company actually (semi) listen to its audience and say "This thing is selling really well, even though we could drop it its selling well we should continue to make it".
Another positive thing:
If the PS2 is continuing to be made and sold 7 years after its creation that probably means the production costs etc. are way low and $ony is probably making decent money on everyone sold.
I would like to see if Nintendo's mega popular console, the Wii, manages to break the PS2's record.
At "only" just under 13.5 million sold so far I wonder how much longer its growth is going to continue.
However, if the PS2 numbers say anything, it proves that a real quality product can continue to sell long after its "generation" has past.
Peace

Playstation 2 will stop selling in 2010.Because the game line=up is still strong and then will drop the price gradually by 10 dollars every once in a while.by the time they sell all the ones already produced, yes i'll agree with 2010 being the year.CONGRATS SONY ON THE BEST CONSOLE EVER RELEASED!

It'll stop being bought, when second tier developers are able to produce games for the next gen, and make profits, because it costs hardly anything to make for a ps2, but loads for a 360 or wii game, and a ps3 games just costs too much they make for 360 and prot.
Thign is atleast every ps2 owner must have had to rebuy, because i mean everyone i know has got the disc read error, so its therefore like 60million actually, because sony failed to make a consol that will last long enough. Yes i no 360's die even quicker, still my mega drive works fine, so does my n64, the best game consol should hardly ever break!

for what it's worth, I've had my V3 PAL unit since launch day (30th November 2000) and it's still going strong.

I had a slim PS2 for a couple years and then traded it in because I bought my friend's FAT PS2 for $1.00. Cogswap works wonders.
Still hasn't died, and it's about launch date too.

I still don't own a ps2...I can't play Zelda on it that I know of. I think the best game system has to be the N64. Golden Eye or Perfect Dark anyone???

Thats good to hear, but i'm a hardcore sega fan, and i think the dreamcast could of had the same success if the saturn never failed. It would be dreamcast vs psx2 still going on, thats a shame.
Much love to sony tho, i wish them the best. Playstation 2 does have some great games tho, even tho i'm not psx2 fan, i'm not going to deny it.

If you think that is how the PS2 got that many consoles sold, then should we also apply that to the 360?

Ya I bet that the 360 count would be at like 8 million if they didn't count people who bought one more then once... I know one guy who went through 4 in 2 months! The last one is still going strong, but he says that the disc drive is messed and it doesn't stop his games from spinning when he opens the tray. His games are in pretty rough shape because of that...

Looks like the PS2 will last until the Next-Next Gen.
Shame that Sony think that PS3's Backwards compatibility isn't important anymore yet the amount of software on offer says otherwise.
My 360 doesn't eat my disks and it plays games fine so it must be knackered!

Sony doesn't care about BWC anymore because everyone who buys a PS3 most likely has a PS2 and maybe even a PS1.
There is no present. We all live in the past and are catching up to our future.

Mad props to Sony! I know my PS2 is still my console of choice. And just to put this out there...
I bought my PS2 the day they hit the market, bit, fat, clunky thing. It's still going strong and i've never had a lick of trouble with it.
It beats the Genesis as my favorite console yet.

Had my PS2 since 2002 sold it to a friend for some PS3 money. I can't imagine many consoles that did not have moving parts not still working. My old Genesis does and so does my Atari 2800 (although I don't have a TV that it will play on)
Moving parts and heat are the issues, and the PS ver2, PS2 and PS3 none of those have heat issues. Now the PS1 that was like the XBox 360, keep it off the rug and it should work fine.
WAY to go PS2
I still get PS2 games on the used side when they are 10 and under if they are great games, 157 video games and counting.

Eat that Xbox fanboys. I don't see any/much original Xboxs on display in stores anymore...
*DISCLAIMER*
I am NOT a fanboy of Sony, Playstation, or any affiliates directly or indirectly associated with Sony or the Playstation franchise. I do have a PS1, PS2, and PSP though.

that's because microsoft did the (silly/smart) thing by removing the xbox from production as soon as the 360 hit the shelves.
i think the original xbox has had one of the shortest (successful to an extent) life spans. I'm sure some SEGA products, or possible Atari products hold the record for shortest life span- however, they were
utterly crap, think 32X and Jaguar.

My slim ps2 sucks. It makes a funky noise sometimes. I still use my launch ps2 as a dvd player 4-5 days a week and the kids play it 3 or 4 times a week without a problem. In the socom 1&2 days it barely got a rest.

Quote: The company also said it had no plans to stop development for the PS2 until 2010 despite claims that the console was cannibalizing PlayStation 3 sales.
I was contemplating selling my ps2 but after reading this i may keep it. Or i could sell it at a higher price than i was going to sell it for.
