It's worth noting that Walmart and Amazon's sales aren't included in this.....and so how many sales are missed from those who buy on-line from Amazon

The deals are far better.

The fact is that despite all those PS3s HD DVD came within a whisker of beating the Blu-ray numbers (and this despite umteen supposedly 'blockbuster' Blu-ray movies this year and a buy one get one free offer).

The truth is HD DVD is recovering from a low point in the year (about the 25:75 level) to 60:40 and - as we can see here - better.

Some 'dead', 'dying' or 'beaten' format?!

Nobodies' numbers are that impressive just yet but as HD DVD goes sub-$200 and begins to lift-off in the 'mass-market' that is very likely to change markedly.

There's that 'fact/proof free' $150 million claim again (course not an ounce of awareness at the irony that the Blu-ray fans honestly prefer to believe their format could be dropped for so little).

The correct view is that with one single movie HD DVD came within a whisker of out-selling Blu-ray and that Blu-ray had to resort to buy-one-get-one-free offers to try and stay ahead (thus imposing even more costs on themselves when costs are already known to be far higher than HD DVDs).

As HD DVD stand-alones continue to sell very well the gap has closed.

....and with the high def market (both formats) @ less than 3 or 4% of the total retail movie disc market claims that anything is "over" are just laughable.

Everyone it seems expected Transformers to help HD-DVD scrape one win over Blu-ray. The fact that Blu-ray discs have continually outsold HD-DVD media in the US at a approximate ratio of 2:1, in Europe at 4:1 and in Japan at 9:1 means that even if Tranformers had won that particular week, it wouldn't have really meant anything. Saying that, the fact that it didn't is notable. With some heavy hitters coming from Blu-ray such as Spiderman, POTC & The Simpsons movie, I personally don't think HD-DVD has any chance of winning any weeks in the forseeable future. Of course, both sales figures are still dwarfed by DVD, so the sooner one format wins out, the better.

With between 10 - 20 time less the number of players (and that's counting all PS3s as Blu-ray playback devices for those who get their panties in a wad about the stand-alone numbers excluding them) HD DVD drew pretty much level with just one film.

All year there were supposedly "heavy hitters" that were supposed to knock HD DVD out of this and yet here at the end of the year we see the gap around 60:40 and in some weeks HD DVD level (or even ahead depending on which numbers you believe).

DVD Empire have had HD DVD ahead for more than a few weeks this year.

- Actually I don't believe it makes such a big deal (either way) with the total % of high def sales being so low (and I have never said otherwise).

That's why Blu-ray's 'lead' is unimportant right now and how come whether HD DVD takes a minor 'lead' in some weeks is irrelevant too
(tho clearly it bothers you that that is the truth of the matter, shame).

Until either format breaks into the mainstrean mass-market and is selling millions of movies across a range of titles the 'lead', whatever it might be, simply doesn't have the enormous importance the Blu-ray crowd continually wish to attach to it.

.....but it still is funny to see HD DVD able to draw level (or even pull ahead - depending on the stat) just the same.

Despite Blu-ray having 10 - 20 times the number of players compared to HD DVD (and again this is counting all PS3s as a Blu-ray player) their lead is deeply unimpressive, that's the underlying fact.

IIRC it's approx 4 discs per HD DVD player and less than 1 per Blu-ray player when averaged out.

Like I said, it's just a matter of time as HD DVD standalones continue to sell very very well.
