Sony might sell animation and digital studios

1 November 2007 19:58 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 9 comments

Sony might sell animation and digital studios Sony Pictures Entertainment is currently looking to sell over 50 percent of their digital and animation divisions which could sell for up to 500 million USD.

Sony Pictures Animation which is best known for movies such as "Open Season" and "Surf's Up" and Sony Pictures Imageworks, which is famous for its effects in the "Spider-Man" trilogy should be worth most of that value.

The company hopes to have one investor as it believes both businesses are "very closely linked." The company also believes both divisions can expand into video games given the right investor.

A Sony spokesperson told the NYTimes that the company was "open to exploring equity partnerships, and it's no surprise that there is market interest in our visual effects and animation businesses."

Somebody is bleeding money... Something tells me that they do not make decent ROI on their Blueray and Cell processor endeavors.

One or two dismal quarters and maybe mighty Sony will refocus on the costumer needs.

putting out a new format is costly actually so its no surprise and toshiba are also in a situation where they need to make money elsewhere to sponsor their format.whoever loses the format war, will lose everything($$$).

I would not say that, I think sony could survive the loss, its funny that they are selling off so much tho, if they made a few billion off some movies then why bother selling off so little()it only amounts to 1 or 3 billoin)?

As you are well aware of Zippy, Sony's only issue isn't just the BD format war, they have screwed up in almost every market they compete in, with exception to their TV's probably. My assumption is that they are heavy in management and short on common sense which seems to be a common business issue these days. Look at how PS3's have gone, the root kit issue, and so on... You can't keep making big mistakes with out it catching up with you eventually.
