Ummm does Acer make quality stuff anyway? I know it's a pretty cheap price but what about cheap materials? From what I've seen their screens and overall design are crap compared to the HP and Toshiba laptops but who knows who will manufacture these screens and the blu-ray drives. Maybe a new decent company this time.

acer does own Texas Instruments's mobile PC (laptop) division, and gateway. it also has its hands in Packard Bell along with some other things.

LMAO, wow, I had forgotten all about Packard Hell. It's amazing that they are still in business. They must be located in another country(the products that is), I don't think the states still carries their products.
"look honey, it said goodswipe! oh wow, that's amazing."

Ahh Acer has been complete garbage... Bought one in like '96... The first and the last.
It ran ok, like it wasn't too bad... But then something broke or something and I had to dish out $180 for something that was super cheap but it would only work with this Acer part... Bastards...

I have been using an ACER AL1716 LCD monitor for about 2 years now, and it is the best monitor i have ever had, still works like new. I can't say that I've had experience with their laptops, though.

When Packard Bell folded in the states ( some time ago ) they moved into the European market and have quite a strong foothold in countries like the UK - possibly because some people confuse them with or think they are connected to Hewlett Packard lol.
Packard Bell is now owned by NEC (Nippon Electric Company ) who suplly all the optical drives etc for their models.

My fathers company uses acers, and they all work great, but then again he has a round the clock service technician. From my experience with them they are good but sometimes not for home computers. Stick with Mac, Dell, and Gateway, if you want a family comp.

As long as I can still watch dvd's and rip them, and the product isn't more expensive, then I see no problem.

Actually, Acer is pretty good. It's for the standard user. I bought the laptop for like $400 it's lasted 2 years thus far, its all good still, I recommend it.

My whole year level in year 9 (160 students, only 2 years ago) had Acer laptops. They were ok (hardware wise) but the major problem was the hinges connecting the screen and the actual computer, they consistently broke and cost (apparently) $150AU to fix.
They also look like crap, but someone has already pointed that out;)

Thus far my luck with Acer products has not been a good one. I do have one of my monitors at work is an Acer flat screen that so far has held up well.
Other than that...no good words from me.

I like a lot of Acer products but their low end products are really low end.
vinny13 - You know that was over a decade ago right? Any chance something might have changed since then.

Had my Acer laptop for 6 month now....Once I got rid of Vista and installed XP, it's been better than any Dell, HP, or Gateway I've owned.

Dell and Acer are complete crap, Dell use to be good but over a couple of years ago they went crap. The system builder I worked for is backing off on Acer because they are soooo bad for Notebooks but there FP monitors are fine. The average customer was lucky to make it 2 years with out incident and the companies warranty policy was becoming an issue due to this.
Other then HP's horrible support their notebooks are very good and if you shop smart they are cheaper as well, which is something that should appeal to you. I have several Toshiba and HP notebooks and the only one I've had issues with was a Toshiba that the mainboard went bad on, but still both MFG's are good. One big issue I find with HP is they put tons of demo/shareware/trial software on their systems and some of their own crappy software like HP Advisor.
ASUS makes a good notebook as well but some of them have very poor sound systems on them, something that HP excels in. Another issue with ASUS is there price which is way high in comparison.
