Los Angeles thinks piracy is a “public nuisance”

10 May 2008 22:26 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 39 comments

Los Angeles thinks piracy is a “public nuisance” Citing “minor input” from the MPAA and RIAA, the Los Angeles County government has now added piracy to its definition of “public nuisance", meaning all properties used in the dissemination of counterfeit goods can now be seized.

Physically pirated goods, such as bootleg DVDs or CDs, are now considered to be the same as counterfeit watches or handbags.

This new so called "Counterfeit Goods Nuisance Abatement ordinance" says that the counterfeit goods “substantially interfere with … lawful commerce in the county, property values, and is detrimental to the public health, safety, and welfare of the county's citizens, its businesses, and its visitors.”

Any property owner that knowingly allows piracy on their premises can be held responsible to pay $1000 USD for every, yes every, pirated work produced. The district attorney can also “temporarily restrain, preliminarily enjoin, and/or permanently enjoin the person or persons intentionally conducting, or knowingly maintaining or permitting the public nuisance from further conducting, maintaining, or permitting such public nuisance.”

The ordinance is similar to that of the recent one passed in New York City but this ordinance does not seem to bother those who upload or download pirated movies and music from the Internet.

This didn't do anything in New York. I can't see why this is going to be any different. Just go to Canal st., bootleg dvd's are all still there.

The legislation in NY has actually done ALOT to stop counterfeit goods from being sold on the streets of NYC. Of course there are people still selling pirated DVDs but nowhere in the abundance that it was 2 or 3 years ago.

I went to CA in 2000 and was surprised at how many spanish peeps were at the mall. I was walking around and I was the only white guy there. This was in Bakersfield, near Los Angeles. My friend who was a kindergarten teacher said 99% of her students were spanish, and their parents thought it unfair to learn English.

They really shouldnt stay here unless they want to learn English. This aint a bilingual country. English is the language of business.

Did they really make english the language of the US? But you can also do business in spanish cause sometimes in the resturaunts they run you can only pay in THEIR currency. Its stupid to send your kids to school in a different country and not want them to learn the language that everyone speaks there.

I am just wondering...Who are the numskulls that even buy bootlegged DVDs? Probably burned on a CMC.Mag disc at X20 speed!!
I mean, Red Box nowadays it has been popping up at every street corner...A rental is $1, a blank DVD is $0.25, more or less- how much cheaper can a bootlegged POS can be? Who are the idiots buying those? And for CD's...you can Google and get almost any song you want, why would someone pay even a cent for a bootlegged CD?!

Because they either don't know how to back up their own or are too lazy to.

If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck!

Quite possibly.. or they are the ones selling them.....

There are plenty of people I fix tv's and microwaves and the like for who don't have computers. It's about 50/50 in the uk by household.. But I'm trying to help by recycling old p3 systems into homes at minimal cost.

My PC is a 7 y.o (maybe 8) Gateway, 950MHz AMD. I got it for free(someone was throwing it away about 3 years ago. I have only invested in some RAM a burner and a mouse! It does all that I need.
The internet is free at Public Libraries and Community Colleges. That's how I stay up to date with my software during summer time when I take a job somewhere away...
This might be a reason for buying a bootlegged DVD:

Windsong, you're such a freakn liar. I have lived in Bakersfield since 2002, and your b.s. statement is so far from the truth.
Did you go to the Valley Plaza? Or the East Hills Mall?
Your "teacher friend" is either full of b.s. like you or your just invented that friend. I work for greenfield school district and they are far from being 99% latino(you don't say spanish because then you are referring to people from Spain..pendejo!).
Anyway, you probably live somewhere down Rosedale, you're white, and you're stupid!
    C-ya at the mall 8^)

WRONG Illegal aliens are not allowed to have firearms. The corrupt LAPD won't even report the ones who commit FEDERAL crimes with guns. I've had more than enough of corrupt politicians who won't enforce their own damned laws; because somebody will call the racists.

If you carry guns, shoot up the streets and sell drugs; yah I want your azz out of here ASAP.

I thought this article was supposed to be about the MPAA/RIAA, pirating, rights infringement...In exchange, it brought out the best out of some people...all I can see is racist and xenophobic remarks...
Anyway, for those that are so "anti-foreigners"...what makes Mr. Smith, natural born U.S Citizen, rapist and killer, that right now is rotting in prison, maybe waiting on death row and leeching on taxpayer's money, what makes him better that Jose, born and raised somewhere in Mexico, hard working man that is actually being productive for the society, as much as he is allowed to be productive...
What happened with "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,..."
Sorry people, you can cry "go home ese" as much as you want, Spanish will very soon become the second language, officially or unofficially, at least in the coastal/southern states. It's a reality. And without the people that you hate so much, if tomorrow all of them would just "vanish", our already crippled economy would just collapse.
Well, you don't have to take the blame, you can always blame the society/environment for making a hater out of you!

the problem being the damage done to the workers who are "in hiding",the unbalancedness to local populations and thier free(not food stamps and health care) services and the stiffening effect to wages.

The "damage" is more triangulable than piracy, I say make the temp systems in place start handing out IDs when they get caught, send them back to work with garnished wages and focus on fixing this one sided antaquited and broken immigration system, that will do more good than a unfunded wall project.
cyprusrom (AfterDawn Addict) 12 May 2008 21:06 Send private message to this user
...But then the Congress would have to brake tradition and actually do something useful...They can't handle the legal immigration, which is pretty much black and white. Every time someone proposes a good bill that seems to solve some issues, they take turns into ruing it, if is not the Senate, then is the House. If somehow through a miracle both Senate and the House agree, then knucklehead says "screw you both", and gives his veto... There is no easy fix, but they are definitely wasting resources on useless projects.

C'mon, Hollywood is probably one of the best revenue sources for drug dealers! But of course, life is stressful when you wake up in the morning and have to choose between 150 pairs of shoes, 100 dresses, 75 purses and
50 bow-ties for your puddle, and make sure they all match!

cousinkix, did you just got shot in the ass by a homie or what's up with you, you sound like you're about to blow.me thinks youre crazy ;) and should lighten up a little bit, there's for sure corrupt cops that dont report those crimes, but im sure that if they're so corrupt they commit them themselves, so you should be angry with the law inforcement, not with the illegal aliens, just remember the techniques used by the original settlers, what was the way in the far west? was it because they were plain and simple scum? or do you think the time and place they had to go through had something to do with it?, its the same for poor mojados, they've being screwd since they were born, they wer screwed in mexico and still are in the US, add to that the police not doing their job, what would you expect?

You know that's a load of crap...! The jobs are not being "taken away" they are given away by the big corporations that outsource overseas where they can pollute without enduring any consequences and where they can find cheap labor! Even your taxes are being done somewhere in India!

Provide some proof behind what you are saying so you can have some backing in what you are defending. I just stated my opinion and thats great that you provided some input too. Just sayin..
