World's first Blu-ray music only disc announced

TrondheimSolistene (The Trondheim Soloists) is one of Norway's most exciting young ensembles and they're celebrating their 20th anniversary with a recording that is said will surpass anything you've ever heard before in sheer sound quality. They will be bringing their recording to eager listeners on the world's very first Blu-ray music disc. With the sheer capacity for incredible sound sampling, the developers of this disc are boasting that every instrument in the ensemble is so clearly placed in the sound that you can actually envision each individual musician playing. The recording itself is set in the Selbu church in Norway, for its acoustic nature and offers a distinct, unique quality.

DIVERTIMENTI, the name of the recording, is produced by Lindberg Lyd and released by 2L, a Grammy nominated record company known internationally for its audiophile quality. 2L previously released TrondheimSolistene's MOZART recording which was declared a record to die for by Stereophile Magazine. The magazine itself has received a Norwegian recording industry Spellemann prize. Additionally, the company is releasing a hybrid SACD coupled with the Blu-ray music only disc to offer multiple options for optimal listening pleasure.

The hybrid SACD is 5.1 Surround + Stereo and produced in Digital eXtreme Definition and comes on a normal compact disc. The Blu-ray Exclusive High Definition Music disc boasts the following features,

2.0 LPCM 24Bit/192 kHz
5.1 LPCM 24Bit/192 kHz
5.1 DTS HD Master Audio 24 Bit/192 kHz
5.1 Dolby True HD 42 Bit/192 kHz
5.1 Doly Digital 48kHz
Fully compatible with the Sony Playstation 3.

I think they are missing the point you'd have to be a freice audiophile to to really tell the difference in anything above CD qaulity, even surround sound comes off as "cute". Its good for a special release and what not but its going to be a long time befor BR as a music media will catch on...mabye a mini disc thats priced int he range of CD hardware and cds...that might do.... Ummmmmmmmm..................this is cool. Can't really say I care about the ARTIST IN SPECIFIC, but maybe the door is opening for all musicians/bands/artists to do this. Blaring the music on a 5.1 pimp system with dope speakers and a killer receiver.................Mmmmmmmmmm.............looking forward. Nickelback, Tool, Paul Oakenfold with this sound, HELL YEAH. Now, regarding what Zippy said; You don't have to be a fierce audiophile AT ALL to see the difference (which is night and day). Music at this quality is noticeably tighter, with substantially less distortion at WAY higher volume levels. Music at this quality will make the most of even the crappiest speakers AND most noticeably will be the distinct recognition of the various chorus lines, instruments and sounds coming from the individual speakers of a 5.1 surround system. What i would really like to know is how much space do these audio tracks actually take up at this quality? Im assuming they would have to be too big to fit on a dvd disk! For most people i can see this being pretty pointless what with cheap CD's and downloadable music though you never really know! [ + quote]

You are all missing the point here. This isnt about space or quality or anything else, this is about Copy protection. As is it proved, BD is the media with the Best working copy protection. IMO studios will be delighted to release their content to a more secure disc. PLUS with this excuse (better audio blah blah blah) i believe that they find a new way to charge you more. Only good think acctually is if they really want to take advandage of the capacity, they can embed video clips, concerts , pics and more. [ + quote]

I fine with the crappy audio quality that I get from youtube. That's not to say I can't tell the difference in the quality. If high quality music were free then you'd see bomb rushing the whole lot. But that's not the case and I've learned to settle. Back on topic I can't very many people buying this disk. As it's been stated, many people either can't or don't care about quality beyond a cd-r. It be, maybe in the range of 10 years, before blu-ray audio disk are popular. You can be assured that there won't be any portable music blu-ray player in any near or far off future. [ + quote]

Hmmm, it will be interesting to see what the response on this one is. I would assume that this is a market test to see if people are willing to spend a little extra cash for better audio. It would be pretty cool to listen to such high quality audio, but I think I would need a better sound system for it. :-) A 7 year old onkyo system might not be what this quality of audio would have in mind. To me, all these Blu-Ray releases seem like a way to boost Sony's PS3 sales. Movies are to be heard in surround sound and music in stereo. What is so surrounding in a song? I think Sony is becoming more of a brand name than a brand itself. [ + quote]

Audience claps in the background, and all instruments mixed accordingly, very cool with the correct setup. [ + quote]
