New WinAmp update brings online music stores

17 July 2008 17:56 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 13 comments

New WinAmp update brings online music stores AOL has announced that the latest update to their popular WinAmp software will give the program access to online music stores.

The update, to version 5.54, lets users buy songs, ringtones, tickets and physical CDs directly from the Jukebox although AOL has not revealed which online music stores will be integrated into the software. There was word that the stores integrated would offer DRM-free MP3s.

Besides the online music store integration, the update "builds in access to AOL Radio's streaming channels, an ability to find videos and other artist info without leaving the software, and a toolbar to let Firefox and other web browsers control WinAmp."

The new version is available for free in a Basic version as well as part of the Pro edition which sells for $20 USD and allows for built-in ripping of CDs to any format the user wants.

You can download WinAmp from here: WinAmp 5

Oh well, since AOL bought out WinAmp from the original owners, it has metamorphosed into something galacticly different from what it first gained acclaimed prominence for - Audio playback. I never use WinAmp for video, let alone use it for buying online tracks.

In fact, my favourite version is 2.91 which, I believe, predates AOL's takeover by a wide margin. How's that for living-in-the-past?

In fact, you can get everything from versions 0.20 (!!!) to 5.24 here:

Whew! I guess it's a good thing my name isn't "nobody" then!

Where wouldja be today without the venerable .mp3 file ???

WinAmp and P2P go hand-in-hand, for all you ipod afficianados out there.

(I'm glad you have it all figured out, though, area_51.) Welcome to AfterDawn. Kwingy Wuvs You. :-)

    Hi 7thsinger! Hi iluvendo!

I've just been too busy at work to play on the internet these days, I'm afraid. (sulk.....)

Gotta head out for work in fact, in just 1 hour from now (another 12-hour graveyard shift 12:00am to 12:00pm; then another 8-hour jobbie; then the Klingon High Council will let me off the hook for two days, and I promise to answer my private messages which I've been shamefully ignoring lately).

[I can be such a lazy shmuck, I know.] Spending too much time listening to WinAmp, I guess <gg>

Yep, I have found WinAmp to be a superb radio tuner, Zippy.

Using ogg and flac free open source codecs perchance?

vlc makes a belting radio and tv tuner too... handles more formats ;)

Not familiar with 'vlc'; there's many media software players out there - I'm sure they all work well enough.

Ogg Vorbis - *lovely* format even if, traditionally, a bit overhyped, better than .mp3 (so is .wma, but what-the-hell?), and flac? ...... great stuff, no loss, BUT nobody really needs lossless audio listening to music thru .88c headphones while commuting to work on the local bus. (i.e, IPOD)

.mp3 reigns supreme - for better or for worse - you _know_ that varnull. The best compression formats often (usually?) don't make it into the mainstream.
