Sony PSP marketing director John Koller has responded to the widespread rumors that a PSP 2 is in the works that would strip out the UMD drive and add dual analog pads.
Koller would not deny or confirm the rumors but did hint that digital downloads were becoming very important and that UMD might be removed.
"[I] can’t comment either way, but I will reiterate that the digital [download] component is very important to us," Koller says. "We’ve been making a concerted effort to really over-emphasize the ability for publishers to publish on the [PlayStation Network]. Fits our view of the world. Eventually the digital distribution arm will have some leverage. I think consumers right now are choosing some tangible benefits of the disc. But we saw how that movie ended with music. And we know there are certainly some benefits to promoting that part of it now."
There have been no new hardware kits sent to developers, noted Koller.

they better think of some way for rest of the UMD games for PSP 1 then, if i'm getting a PSP2, they better let me play my UMD games somehow.

The only way I can imagine that would work, is *somehow* syncing a PSP to a PS3, and then having PSN running a complete check of the UMD disc in the drive.
The problem with that is this, the NoUMD mode on M33, CFW, does that not 'emulate' a UMD drive inorder to run CSO/ISO games? In conjunction with the new Hider for games that check for that sort of thing, would make PSP1 piracy to PSP2 basically rampant as hell.
~Granted~ my understanding of how a PSP executes its CSO/ISO format is really low, and I'm more then likely wrong.
My best guess would be Sony porting the entire PSP collection, into a CSO/ISO like format, and selling them at the standard/reduced price over the PSN, with some sort of reduced price for those who can *prove* (more then likely by my magic 'scanning' method I referenced above) they actually own the UMD copy. (Problem with that also, and I'm not sure if this is a wide spread thing, is you can now rent UMD games at Family Video/Blockbuster.)

moving 2 dowloaded content from umd may not be the brightest idea cause the small portion of casual gamers (including me) dont have internet capabilities when theres other priorities that r important in life. need bc for it 2 work right IMO.

Hows the bit rate on blu tooth or wifi could you play a UDM off a wireless device?
If not why not a DRM'd secure UDM image? that would work for UDM movies as well?

It is a geek dream to be able to download everything, but the reality is that geeks are a very small percentage of the real population.
May people like me don't like to wait to download a game or movie, it is better to pop a disk.

Actually, I hope for the best of both worlds here. I hope they find a secure way to put the media on a memory card form. My UMD drive died. as in not working at all. Meaning that I can't play Lumines without resorting to hacking my PSP.( Lumines is the reason I bought a PSP.) H(eck).. I even purchased Lumines Supernova of of PSN for PS3 because I like to support the games that I really enjoy. I still haven't hacked my 360. I know HOW to.. I just haven't because I actually enjoy paying for quality games.
Back to the PSP.. the games actually do play better foom the memory card. Shorter load times, No wear on a disc drive... all itwould take is finding a way to keep the card from gettin hacked. But this is Sony... PS3 hasn't been fully hacked yet.( at least as of this writing)
