Chinese media player offers native 720p playback

Although they are certainly not the first company to do so, China-based Gemei had launched their latest portable media player, dubbed the HD-660, which allows for native 720p HD playback on its 4.3-inch widescreen display.

The player sports a 480x272 resolution and can hold TransFlash memory cards up to 32GB. For audio, the player supports MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC and for video the player supports RM, RMVB, AVI, FLV and MPEG video files. JPG, PNG and bitmap are supported photo formats.

The source adds that a "remote control is bundled with the HD-660, as is a video cable that allows it to connect to TVs and play back its content that way. The 2,000mA lithium-ion battery's life is rated at six hours when playing videos. A USB 2.0 interface is used to connect with Windows 2000, XP or Vista operating systems, along with Mac OS X. Speakers are built-in, and there is an FM radio tuner with recording functionality."

The player is so far only available in China with a cheap price tag of about $88 USD.

Exactly the point of the question. How in the world can it playback native 720p content on "its 4.3 inch widesceen display". That's a little deceiving. I assume it means to say that it can play 720p content without conversion to the specific 480x272 format. ---Chikn [ + quote]

The first person to get one of these might have a bit of a shock.. all those listed formats can be buried in a horrid and near impossible to make .asf wrapper... just like the damn chipods which use a screwy M2S4 with video and audio streams reversed moronic format which no off the shelf converter will make.... Don't you just love the way the "free market" chinese always make these things using proprietary codecs built in... rm/rmvb and flv.. not known for quality are they sigh . There are perfectly good open standard video formats about.. yet they still insist on using this locked down stuff.. pay nothing for the device, then spend �200 trying to find some proprietary converter lump of junk to convert your files... not me.. Free open source software = made by end users who want an application to work. I would rather you hate me for who I am than love me for what I am not. It can play the 720p content on a TV, and can play on the display without conversion. Of course it will not be true HD with such small resolution. [ + quote]

Any retailers selling this thing? Unfortunately for them, all Blu-ray protections have been broken and BD rips can be found around the Internet, usually before the retail even hits shelves. [ + quote]
