LG has said today that they are upping production of LED-backlit LCD TVs, hoping to sell 5 million units in 2010.
Overall, for 2009, the company's goal is to sell 18 million LCD TVs, making it the second largest LCD maker behind rival Samsung.
LED-backlit LCDs are thinner than current models and produce more vivid images, better contrast, and offer longer lifespans.
Simon Kang, chief executive of LG's home entertainment division, added that 18 million units sold was within reach and most likely will be surpassed.

Good luck trying to sell that many cause the price will probably be so high that no one will buy them.

I don't really like LG TVs... It was either an LG TV or my Sharp TV at the time, both the same specs, but I got the Sharp instead cause it was hundreds cheaper.

I don't really like LG tvs either, because i never seen them make tvs, until recently, while i seen sharps from way back. I like samsung though, for their look, and Sony for their brand (kinda) and their XMB or what ever they called it.(their gui/menu navigation thing.)

No-one seems to be considering the quality of picture. Comments about liking or disliking the sound of the brand-name are childish. Backlit LCDs have the potential for the best picture, and are cheaper, I believe, than plasma (which looks like disappearing with now only two manufacturers). I entered this forum expecting a more intelligent level of comments.

Yeah Quality is something that I consider when buying a TV but so is money when the economy is in the toliet. And if compairing LED-Backlit LCD to Standard LCD then your back lit ones are way more in price.

When these LED TV's saturate the market, I guarantee you they will come down in price. You know, it was not that long ago that plasma TVS were in the $10000 price range, and now look at their price. It's all about supply and demand. - BLUEBOY

Yes the comments about backlit LCD TV being expensive (an LG 55" model, for example is available with the same feature set as either a standard LCD or a backlit LCD - the latter is nearly twice as expensive). But it offers about the best quality picture available for flat-screen TV. So, if you can hold out, I'd wait a year or so, because predictions are that prices will fall rapidly, and you would hope to have the TV for years. It's a matter of whether you can wait or not. And for those with an antipathy toward LG, the nearest Sony model is much dearer, and no better.

Your right on this. My LCD I have now looks great and will hopefully take me all the way till the prices fall. So it should all work out.
