Western Digital releases first 1 TB notebook hard drive

According to their latest press release, Western Digital has begun shipping the industry's first 1 TB notebook hard drive, the WD Scorpio Blue. Additionally, the company is releasing a 750GB model of the same line.

The largest capacity SATA drive has 333 GB-per-platter technology and being a 2.5-inch drive, is easily made portable.

The Scorpio Blue drives offer 3 Gbps transfer rates.

"The convergence of the growing mobile computing and digital media trends produces demand for desktop-like capacities in portable devices," adds Jim Morris, senior vice president and general manager of client systems at WD.

"Our new WD Scorpio Blue drives enable people to take even more of their digital collections with them wherever they go and, realizing the value of their data, back up their notebooks on their My Passport drives."

I think you will need a fire blanket to sit the notebook on and a pair of oven gloves to type cause it will produce some heat. [ + quote]

I'm sure early adopters will gobble this up. I'll be waiting at least a year before I consider getting a 1TB notebook drive to make sure the kinks get worked out of them. [ + quote]

If you are thinking about getting this..you better double up and get a backup as well. 1TB is very painful amount of data to lose all at once! [ + quote]

According to Engadget, both this 1TB and it's smaller brother, the 750GB drive will come with a My Passport SE (basically Western Digital's enclosure) making this either an internal or external drive at your choice. Also, Engadget says the price is $250 for the 1TB or $190 for the 750GB. I personally will wait until they can get this drive down to 2 platters and around $200 before picking one up. [ + quote]

Funny thing my aunt's laptop only has a 250gb hard drive in it, but get insanely hot so much so that it cuts off automatically after only a littlr over an hour of use. But when u only have one fan and a amd turion ship in it that was bought from staples then i guess that explains it . . . - BLUEBOY [ + quote]

looks perfect for a PlayStation 3 update from 40 GB to 1 TB but im not spending out the butt on it though ill wait till newegg has them on sale which probably will be a good while since its only wd issues maybe samsung will release one soon [ + quote]

I'll probably be getting this along with my new laptop. However it might be better to wait to see how they perform since I don't believe any current laptop is made to sufficiently deal with the possible heat? [ + quote]

Hopefully they didn't sacrifice quality just to push it out the door and say they were the first. Need to upgrade my ps3's Hdd and I was waiting for a 1tb one to become available, but now I think I'll wait a couple months to see how reliable they are and how much heat they throw. Maybe I'll just pony up the money and go SSD instead. [ + quote]

To all those who are looking forward to this for their PS3: The ps3 can go to at least 2TB (I'm not sure if it will do more) with an ESATA adapter and a hardware port multiplier. [ + quote]

Awwww.... WD beat SeaGate this time. :( Ah well, it's tit-for-tat. As I recall SeaGate got to 1TB mark first for the desktops.
