Roku adds 10 new content channels

Roku has announced the addition of 10 new content channels, giving users more options than the current Netflix, Amazon VOD and MLB TV lineup.

The new channels are Blip.tv, Facebook Photos, Flickr, FrameChannel, Mediafly, MobileTribe, Motionbox, Pandora, Revision3, and TWiT. Each will be available through the newly updated Roku Channel Store interface via their set-top boxes.

The interface will be similar to App Stores, where Roku box owners can choose which apps they want. From there, the content will be sorted as "new," "most popular" and "top-rated."

The firmware update is being rolled out now and should take about two weeks to reach all users.

I already had a NetFlix account and thought it would be convenient to streams some movies into the bedroom. It's small, simple, unobtrusive and works well. At the price point when I bought it, it was and still is worth the investment, and the new channels are a nice addition. For the living room however, with the price drop in Blu-Ray players with BD-Live that already stream NetFlix and some with Pandora, that seems like a better investment. [ + quote]

Can't wait for the day Roku box will stream my (Divx/mkv/avi/mp3) stuff from my network!! I've been trying to connect PC's to TV for years and havn't found a good inexpensive way yet. Media Center PC limited, Blu-ray player like LG does good job but too expensive (its 2009 Discs are thing of the past IMO), home built low power media center box too much work. Roku got everything, Ethernet, HDMI, Wireless and very good price!! [ + quote]

The additional costs is like $4 for a HDMI cable or $8 for a VGA one and a headphone cord. [ + quote]

WDC thing is stupid and limited, it doesn't have Ethernet. My $30 Phillip DVD player already does all that and more. Right now my hacked tivo will stream divx from my computer but not natively, it needs to convert on host to tivo format first then stream. By connect I don't mean to use my TV as monitor, been doing that from Canopus Video card days. [ + quote] This message has been edited since posting. I've got the WD Live Media and it's a fantastic little unit Easy swap HDDs I keep three 500gig HDD loaded at all times 1 for TV Shows, 1 for Blu-ray, 1 for DivX Movies The WD Passport HDD are great with just a USB for power and viewing Ease of disconnect both the wd player and computer, transfers are a little slow, but they do the job [ + quote]
