German warning of IE leads to explosion in Firefox downloads Last week, the German Federal Office for Information Security made a statement warning users of the security vulnerabilities of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser and recommended that users use an alternative browser, such as Firefox, Opera or Chrome.
Today, Mozilla has said that Firefox downloads have exploded since the warning, with 300,000 downloads taking place from Friday until Monday. Opera said that downloads doubled week-on-week.

For the week before the warning, Mozilla says average downloads of the browser was about 70,000 daily.

i'd expect microsoft to publish a fix very soon with all this negative publicity, shame they didn't fix it when they were first made aware of the issue.

What a waste of time, if you know were you go and have all utility's to safeguard your connection, eg. Mal-ware, virus program, encriptions and others, you don't need to change your browser.

But for those people who wants 3 sec. faster than IE that's good, but even if you change to others browser like fire fox or others and you are not careful you'll have the same issue of security.

I'll keep my IE8 and don't loose sleep because of it

Casuals are not going to grasp such subtleties they will just sway with the headlines.

It's a matter of who you are most likely to trust..

A business trying to keep you locked in to it's flawed products, or a government department concerned with peoples information and financial security..

I third that..I like Microsoft and all, but seriously..the Xbox 360 and their browsers are so screwed up. They have the potential of being really really good..but it's the lazyness of Microsoft that makes you wonder sometimes.

Do people still use Opera?

1123.1.2010 13:49

Yeah i'd used Opera for years (along with Firefox), Opera's a great browser, the only reason i'm no longer using it is that it provides nothing over Firefox. Even started trying out Google Chrome recently, though again that offers nothing over Firefox so i suspect it'll be uninstalled fairly soon.
