Sealed NES 'Stadium Events' sells for $41,000

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 27 Feb 2010 1:15 User comments (21)

Sealed NES 'Stadium Events' sells for $41,000 We reported two weeks ago that an NES console with an opened copy of Stadium Events sold for $13,000, a high premium, although there are only known to be around 10 copies of the game in existence.
Today, that number has been blown out of the water, with a sealed NTSC copy of the game selling for $41,300 today, alone.

Read the auction:
"An online article states that, “The North American, or NTSC, version of Stadium Events is universally accepted as the rarest licensed NES game available for purchase in North America”. As the article continues, “ONLY ONE OF WHICH IS FACTORY SEALED”. If this is true then THIS IS that “ONLY” game that is factory sealed. This is truly an opportunity of a lifetime.

The PAL versions (many listed for sale here on EBay) were never recalled and therefore are not nearly as valuable as this NTSC version I am selling. Not only is this a NTSC version - it is factory sealed, the box alone (opened) is estimated at approximately $10,000. Do your research - this is truly ONE OF A KIND!!"

wish i had a few of those lying around opened or not.

What is the intrinsic value of some junk that is gonna sit somewhere in the dark and never be used for any purpose-except collect dust? I never understood how someone can put such a high value on something like this, with no practical purpose at all...

I really don't understand why "Collectors" pay these insane prices.

Granted, they may be able to resell it for twice that price in the future but I doubt it. Also, most collectors don't resell items that they buy which makes me wonder even harder why someone would spend $41,300 on a game, even with it being 1 of 10.

I watched that auction from within hours of it being posted and, surprisingly, it hit the final price of $41,300 with three hours to go.

Since it had a few hours left I thought it would at least double in some sort of crazy bidding-war and hit between $80,000 and $100,000; it didn't happen but I'm still amazed it went for $41,300.

if you ask me it looks like it was re shrink wrapped. for all the collector knows it could be an empty box with weights.

thats way too high for a game

Can't believe I missed out on this one...

I've got $500,000,000,000 in Zimbabwe currency, wonder if that would cover it? :)

Read the collector's comments, they didn't even know about the value until after the last auction with an opened copy.

I think I'll start looking in my basement for riches.

Crazy. That's like saying I will trade a house for a videogame. Crazy!

Collectors obviously find it an enjoyable thing to do, clearly the winner wasn't short of cash.

I guess, I might pay to collect things if I suddenly got crazy rich and didn't know what to do with my money. I still don't see much of a point to it, it's not like a car that you can enjoy driving. :P

Maybe it's something along the lines of paintings, they are nice to look at so people spend lots of money on nice/rare ones.

1128.2.2010 02:55

In this case, I don't find it to be anywhere close to a rare painting. A rare painting/sculpture/art object is on display and one can appreciate the craftsmanship, colour, expression...whatever. An old dusty game, covered in a paper box and wrapped in plastic is just that...a dust collector.

1228.2.2010 10:19

...And your the ONLY one in the entire world with said dust collector.

And:)?
Don't get me wrong, people can do whatever they want with their surplus of cash(and obviously those guys have LOTS of it!), I am just trying to understand it, where does it draw its value from?
I was just thinking, if tomorrow the guy would just Give that damn expensive dust collector to me, without the possibility to sell it or exchange it for other property/services,just to own it,have it in my possession, how would that augment my well-being? Ain't gonna make the mornings brighter and the bitters sweeter by looking at it every day...it would be just sitting there, Collecting dust:).
However, to each his own...I guess is a good thing that something so simple-but RARE, can bring so much meaning in someone's life, and they're fortunate enough to afford it.

Wow, it definitely seems like there is some shill (or fake) bidding going on there. The other one hit $41,300 with about three hours left. This one has jumped from $100,000 to $800,000 in less than one day, something is definitely going on.

In other news: A whole lot of these "rare" games were found, turns out over 10,000 copies of the NTSC version are still in known existence. ;-)
