Rumor that won't go away: Sony working on hack-proof PS3?

If it's made by humans it can be cracked by humans. Good luck on that one Sony.

Nothing is hack proof...sony had a good run with the ps3, but only because of linux. Now they think that they are security gods...and they are not.

Its not just that , its some short of R&D for them IMO.
They learning.
If they eventually succeed, imagine how much money a hackproof system/software/Hardware will bring in.
However, I dont think sony is just after PS3/PS4/NGP etc, if they found a way to lock for real a gaming console they will apply it in more devices.

The good thing about people hacking is that Sony going to create new model and would be price drop ;) Now I can get a PS3..

I don't get why Sony doesn't also go after people playing online with games they pirated as well? I read that Sony just banned them but not the PS3 mac address and to get back online you can create another account on the same console.

I would never purchase a Sony or Apple product.

Sony was a big proponent of fair use during the Beta/VHS days.
Now it's just dollars and cents that means the most to powers at be who probably need somebody to program their DVR's.

Well seeing the hacks only come from people leaking Sony's firmware code, I would assume they could make an un-hackable PS3.

Even the hackers say Sony need to make a new PS3 design to fully secure it again.

I see this as cat and mouse. If $ony left the Linux in, most of the publicity would really not have come into light. Now everyone is out to crack PS3 and get hacked software. I own a PS3, but I'm not that involved with it and have no interest in getting with a cracked edition. I wish people that want to crack well, as $ony is going to play a stupid game.

Well, if Sony had used proper crypto-keys, they wouldn't be in this mess in the 1st place. All they really need to do is make a proper set, and it's still pretty much uncrackable for a good long time.

Of course, to make this work for *all* PS3s, they'd have to have some kind of incentivized exchange program, to get all the old models back, and then proceed to ban each and every old PS3 MAC from online play. Good luck with THAT, Sony... =3

Knowing those money-grubbing idiots, they'll penalize the public by making them pay for some sort of bs "upgrade" that merely implements the new keys.

Why does Sony think adding a bigger hard drive is much incentive to anyone?
I thought one of the big deals about PS3 was the easy (and cheap) upgrade of the hard drive anyways?

I remember the story of the american government buying 2000 ps3's before the slim ones came out strictly for jailbreaking them and linking them together to run linux since using the ps3s were cheaper than buying the parts seperatly.

the only way to make something unhackable is for it not to be in the owners possession.

Good for Sony. I wish Micro$haft will do the same with the Xbox 360. I've counted at least 2-3 times where it was obvious a player had hacked the game.

Hello? It was sold to do far more than that, considering "OtherOS" was an original feature. The PS3 is a 50 MFLOP (double precision) to 200 MFLOP (single precision), 9-core (1 main core that handles everyday tasks such as I/O, 8 co-processors that are more general-purpose), insanely powerful Linux machine for $300, that also includes advanced graphics and sound capabilities. How is it difficult to understand that anyone would want to exploit the inherent potential there? I defy you to find a more powerful computer for less cost anywhere.

Irrelevant. Sony promised the feature itself, and quibble as you like, OtherOS simply offered the ability to run a different, open OS on the Cell architecture, with all the power and flexibility that implies. If you actually think Linux is useless, well, you're flat wrong, and a good percentage of the world would agree.

As to "showing it in writing", Sony did that themselves, in endless print and video ad copy for the system. I do not feel the necessity to regurgitate their marketing copy; go find it yourself; hell, just look at one of the original systems' box! Simply put, Sony marketed OtherOS as a (quite useful) feature and selling point, then removed it on a whim. While YOU may find no use for the feature, many people do, and YOUR quibbles are quite suspect, since by your own admission, you have no comprehension of the feature at all, or any use for it.

Now, if Sony had decided to only not include the feature in new versions, but didn't remove it from older systems (as was initially the case), that's short-sighted but quite legitimate. But removing a feature that many people originally bought the system for, without any recourse, is not only unfair, it's quite obviously foolish; they wouldn't have this problem with CFW right now if they hadn't been poons about it.

Are you serious, cart0181, or being intentionally obtuse? While you may have enough money to buy a PC + game console, many people don't. Furthermore, $300 is an excellent price for such a powerful computer (games or no); you think people who use it that way are fools..? Sounds like yer mommy buys all your hardware for you, bub. It's the absolute cheapest way to build a supercomputer, as well, and the US gov't. thinks so too.
