Philips 16x LightScribe drive bundled with Nero

Nero send us an announcement regarding a new LightScribe enabled Philips DVDRW16LSK 16x DualLayer enabled recorder. Not surprisingly, the Philips drive comes with the Nero Burning ROM, which was the first recording software suite to support LightScribe disc labeling.

Nero, leaders in digital media technology and Philips, one of the world�s largest manufactures of consumer electronics, announced today that they have partnered with LightScribe to bring the Direct Disc Labeling technology to consumers. With this implementation, Nero, Philips and LightScribe allow the user to take control of the entire digital media creation process from start to finish.

Philips� new DVDRW16LSK, a 16X dual layer, dual format DVDRW drive, supports LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling, which is a new technology that offers consumers and businesses a simple, no-hassle way to burn professional silkscreen-quality labels on their CDs and DVDs.

�Nero and Philips together provide the perfect vehicle to bring LightScribe to consumers,� said Jim Corbett, Executive Director of Nero AG. �Nero�s family of award-winning digital media products and Philips� new 16X DL burner with LightScribe�s Direct Disc Labeling, gives the user artistic license to design disc labels any way they like.�

After data is recorded to a disc, users can then turn the disc over, reinsert it into the drive and burn a precise, iridescent label with their desired text and graphics using the same laser that burns the data � no printer, permanent marker or adhesive labelling is required.

So far, IMHO this Lightscribe technology is a joke. I purchased a HP Pavillion a820n computer with this feature. The store I purchased the computer from last month ( Office Depot) doesn't even carry blank media. I looked at a few other stores such as CompUSA and Circuit City and they don't have lightscribe data either. The reasons why I won't be using Lightscribe is because they certaintly won't be DVD's costing .30 each and they might not work with the game and movie data I store on them. No Thanks! [ + quote]

Yeah, it really seems like a better deal to just get regular blanks and use a sharpie, when the lightscribes can only be black and that sort of yellowish color. Also, the only manufacturer I've seen is Verbatim, which seems to dominate everything. I know they are some of the best media, but they are expensive as well. If they'd get cheaper manufacturers, more people might use it. [ + quote]

I as well got real excited about this tech. It will fail becuase you need special 20 a disk media for it. No thanks...good idea though [ + quote]

I bought the HP 640I at Wal-Mart for $99 and bought a 10 pk of CD-R Verbatim disks for $7. You can also find the CD-R disks at compusa and bestbuy. The DVD blanks will be available in April for about $1 each. The companies that will make these disks are Memorex, Verbatim and TDK. I am enjoying labeling my CD's and look forward to labeling my DVD backups. You don't have worry about damaging the die with a sharpie and the labels won't peel off sitting in your RV. [ + quote]

i'm not sure how the hp version of this drive is. but i have an external lacie burner.. all the same specs as the one mentioned in this article. the one i have is external and has firewire and usb. of course being on mac. i use firewire. granted the media is a bit much. but it is for sure worth it. i'm using these for my own personal back ups. like anything... since more computers.. more manaf. start making these drives.. then the media will be available more and of course they will be competing to bring down prices. so quit your whining and moaning. and have you seen the results on these? if you know how to do it.. they look really good. ie.: the image you want to burn.. if its in color, bring it into photoshop or any picture editing software and turn it into grayscale or black & white. then just darken the image. i just did that with a cd of mine. and it looks really good. so before you start clowning on something.. test it out for yourself.
