I don't see it,maybe if/when BR gets a DVD layer I could see it.

This is good. Blu-ray is faulty, the recording layer is so close to the surface that if you scratch your disc you are screwed. There will be no wasy to buff the scratches out without rubbing off your recording layer.

HD-DVD has their layer close too but not nearly as close as Blu-ray.

HD-DVD needs to succeed... I like Sony, I like PS3 but their format has flaws that NEED to be adressed.

Blu-ray Disc Blu-ray software sales have now surpassed HD-DVD for the first time the week of December 24 and they did so by an impressive 20 percent. The sales gap is expected to widen further in 2007 based on research conducted by Twentieth Century Fox and Blu-ray is expected to outsell HD-DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of the first quarter.

One of the driving factors behind the growth in sales is the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was launched on November 17, 2006 in North America. The PS3 has been selling out at retail outlets since it was launched and despite shortages Sony has been able to meet its target of shipping 1 million PS3s in North America by the end of 2006. What's even more impressive is that they did it faster than their top-selling PlayStation 2 (PS2) platform did when it was launched. Sony is now targetting 6 million PS3 consoles shipped worldwide by the end of the fiscal year (end of March 2007).

While many have doubted the effect the PlayStation 3 would have on the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD it's hard to argue with the numbers. Blu-ray sales are up 700 percent since the mid-November launch of the PlayStation 3 and other Blu-ray players from Sony, Panasonic and Philips. According to a recent survey by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) of over 10,000 PS3 owners, 80 percent indicated they will buy Blu-ray movies and 75 percent said they use the PS3 as a primary device for viewing movies. However, this shouldn't come as such a big surprise as those that have bought the PS3 might as well take advantage of the Blu-ray playback capability, which still is the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market at just $499.

The content advantage that Blu-ray enjoys is another major factor that should become more and more evident now that the Blu-ray exclusive studios (Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) are starting to release more titles in the format. When looking at the 20 top selling DVDs of 2006 almost all were released by movie studios supporting Blu-ray, which means that titles such as Pirates of the Carribean and Cars will only be available for Blu-ray. The content advantage should further shift in Blu-ray's favor as the format neutral studios (Warner, Paramount) catch up their Blu-ray release schedules with HD-DVD so that the same movies are available for both formats.

Overall the Blu-ray backers are confident that it's only a matter of time before the Blu-ray format becomes the dominant format in the US market, just as it already accounts for 96% of the market in Japan.

oh ya BR has won with tis buggy DL and half arsed codecs witch they are just now fixing,HD might not be alot better but they are doing thigns slow and steady got the right codecs off the bat have stable DL AND have a DVD layer to add play ability on non HD DVD players,all in all HD DVD is making better headway but dual players are coming out this year and in 09 that might make bring a end to the format war.

It is the cost to the end user that will decide the outcome, as was the case with bm and vhs. if a blue ray film costs £40 and a HD-DVD costs £30 what you going to chose for the exact same film but with HD-DVD you will probably get less of the crappy xtras?

maybe with dual players going to be the norm soon it comes down to who gives the consumer more features and let them keep more of their money.

Lets just hope they figure it all out by May of this year. I'm looking to buy a PS3 in May, but if Blu-ray is badly beaten i will be rethinking it.

Where HD-DVD completely bombed out on its initial release of its set top players in 2006 during the Vegas NAB show. Best Buy reported a 98% return of defective units, and other retailers had similar stories of high return rates.

Evidently the units were locking up, freezing the video and not booting up at all due to excessive heat and bad power supply issues.

Noting the number of Blu-ray and HD-DVD titles available at Wal-Mart in an unscientific study yesterday, WallyWorld had 10 HD-DVD titles to the greater Blu-ray amount of 15 titles.

Moving over to our local Best Buy, a similar ratio, albeit larger number of titles were available there, too. BB had 65 BR titles vs. 39 HD titles in stock.

This is also a similar ratio in all available titles worldwide at this point in time from all sources. There are roughly 30-40% more movies available on Blu-ray over HD-DVD.

Recent studies have shown that the average porn user prefers to use his or her computer to access porn and typically downloads movies via streaming or other similar Internet technology, in lieu of buying DVD or VHS copies.

If this information is accurate, then Blu-ray has nothing to fear from the pitifiul, pathetic whinings of the HD-DVD camp and its brainwashed zombie followers.

I would rather have 200 GB of data stored on a single disc to back up my hard drive than a whimpy 30 GB any day of the week.

As for scratch resistance? That is exactly why the new discs have come out with new scratch resistant layers. No problems there.

HD-DVD is so far behind in the technological game, that they are desperate to try any and all last-ditch efforts to stay in the game.

The war is over? Nice try. How many people actually have Blu-ray or HD-DVD? The war is just getting started. I'd like to see those 200GB discs - since they aren't out yet - and what the price would be, and the fact that there aren't any PC BR drives that can record on them, and what they would cost also.

Who cares what happened at a show? They work fine now. Not to mention Blu-ray players are having problems playing new releases due to the change in BR Java (look up Descent).

Blu-ray is anti-consumer and pro-big business with its strict DRM management - why do you think Disney is all over it? They're the company that pushed DivX hard so that you would rent the movie instead of owning it, and they were the biggest supporter of Macrovision on VHS. Blu-ray wants you to have NO backup rights.

Plus, at least I can buy a HD-DVD and it will play on my current player.

not to mention the cock up on codecs and java BR is still buggy,HD DVD is steady and so far not to bad,the 3 layer thing will be interesting on how they "fix" it if hollywood goes for it you'll need new players for the most part.

The PS3 will help sell blue rays and will win right? HA thats why there have been 6 ps3s sitting in our walmart for the last 3 weeks. They might ship a million but they haven't sold that many. My advice go with the flow, the HD-DVD might not have as great quality as the Blu-ray but that didn't stop the nintendo and sega era from wiping out the turbo grafix 16 and jaguar systems.

IF the PS3 was 300-400 with the 20GB HD,minus the HDMI,WI FI,Card reader and such tri it down and sale it to the masses not the elites....,but because sony went the high end rout the PS3 is not going to help BR sales.

pretty much but I wonder,what would have happened if SOny released the PS3 with the basics to get online have HDD and wireless pads with BR and sell it in that sweet spot of 300-400 it would have won BR right then and there if sony could produce enough of them.

I have a HD-A2 DVD player, most people who know anything about both formats know that there is NO discernible difference in picture quality. Anybody who says otherwise is just a Blu Ray Fanboy ;)

you forget the first wave of BR movies use a old codec thus is a bit less in quality compared to the HD stuff.
BR has been tripped to many times by sony and it seems sony might be taking it down with them 0_o

That statement is incorrect. That is an original fault, and was originally fixed by putting a fixture similar to the the UMD on the disc, but ended with a certain type of plastic layering that can withstand wire wool. I plan to test this soon, once BR becomes slightly more mainstream and I can test it better.

why cant they coat the ps3 is this fantastic plastic of defense? or the ipod? but none of my blurays have scratches, though a few had fingerprints from carless handlers..

i have scratches on my front and i dont even handle it hard. hell the sony packagent gave it plenty of them from that plastic the ps3 is wrapped in..

Small things you do will show scratches, but they won't affect anything on the disc.
