Firm claims Wii will outsell competition until 2008

According to the market research firm IDC, Nintendo's new Wii console will continue to outship and outsell the competition, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, throughout 2007 and 2008.

However, the firm does not see a clear cut winner anytime soon. The Xbox 360 enjoyed a year's head start over its competition and the Wii is selling very well, but even those factors leave no winner as the dominant console.

IDC had this to say in a statement: "IDC believes hardware shipments of Nintendo's Wii will capture a little more than a third of the worldwide market by 2008, rising slightly above Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360"

The firm then continued by observing that: "Nintendo is the only one of the three manufacturers working to grow its accessible market for its hardware and software by broadening its audience beyond the traditional market"

While Sony and Microsoft continue to strive for more powerful hardware and home entertainment packages, IDC feels that Nintendo will continue to keep capturing new consumers or those that would otherwise be afraid of more powerful, expensive systems.

The firm firmly believes that by leaving Sony and Microsoft to fight it out for the higher end market, the Wii will continue to penetrate the market.

it all in what you like.but i will say this i think the wii is a great machine with a fresh spin on things .but when it comes to killer games i think the xbox360 wins.and as for sony the days of the ps2 are over you are no longer the big boy on the block u want to win this war you better have a ace in the hole. I think if you look in the dictionary under "ace in the hole" you will find a picture of Solid Snake. I know I will get a PS3 for MGS4. Then I will wrap it back up and return it to the store and sell MGS4 on Ebay- [ + quote]

WTH are these farkers clairvoyant or something? o_O how can they see into the future? the only way N will outship $ony is if they make more units than $ony. Should something happen and they don't make more units than $ony than guess what? They can't outship them anymore. HAH! As for outselling $ony, will SW ultimately drives how many consoles are sold. If N can't bring out the hits, $ony will. Tekken 6, FFXIII & MGS4 are total Xbox360/Wii killers. N has some pretty big competition among those four games. Whoops did i mention Resident Evil 5!? xhardc0re ture to a point but look at it like this the WII is almost half price and was better stocked for the first launch thu its filling out better than either the 360 or PS3 could have dreamed,the reason PRICE this is going to be Nintendo trump card games will help it more but the price alone is going to push it sales. Hmm I dont see where the PS3 is going to have much of an advantage. Sure they do have some good games coming out, but so does the 360. Halo 3 to name 1 ...... And as far as the Wii goes for the price you cant beat it but it is really going towards those who are part-time gamers. None of the the big games are going to be able to run on it unless they downsample everything in the game. But that was nintendos plan all along, get people who dont normally buy new systems or invest much in gaming to purchase the Wii. And clearly its working. [ + quote]

someone should rename this thread to Wii will outsell competition until 2008 :P now that modchips are coming out, the homebrew scene needs to jump all over the Wii & build some great apps. Whether N likes it or not, the widespread accessibility of homebrew & other media apps on their system would propel them past 360 & PS3 in consumer loyalty & respect. [ + quote]

I would like to see the ability to backup your downloaded games at 5-10 a pop thats money gone if you lose them.... [ + quote]

Good news as for Resident Evil 5 that coming out for the xbox 360 and the wii is getting Resident Evil: Chronicles and you can bet that game will look even more stunning then re4 or even the remake. Also those no doubt that MGS 4 will come out for the 360 with more content just like MGS2 did (dont think they are happy theres no rumble for the ps3) [ + quote]

Sony just settled with the rumble people so they can have a pad out that has rumble by the time anythign worth while game wise comes out. [ + quote]

zimmy you are right I should have said most likely mgs4 will come out 360 as for the pads that would piss off alot of people (1.4 million ps3 sold)nor would developers program for a niche controller. i see people complaining of the ps3 price, and compared to a 360 with a peripheal or two, its the same price as a low end ps3, and you have the potential of bluray and both have the same hard drive space. a wifi adapter alone will bring you up to 500 for the 360. and in my opinion, the wii is the most overpriced console here. it costs around $150-160 to make the wii, and they are raking in cash left and right. i cost sony $200, and it makes me feel better knowing that they took it to get the console to me. more for my money.
