You're missing the point... A Blu-ray <i>supporter</i> just stuck a HD-DVD drive in their new laptop.

my mom just got an HD-DVD equipped pavillion w/ a go7600 for just 2k, the rest was same except hers has 2 hdd's. wtf.

Does anybody remember the VHS and BETA battle? VHS was the cheaper of the two, the tapes were cheap, the playback machines were cheap and less prone to damage, dust or breakage. The VHS tape is by no means as reliable as an AK-47 but compared to the BETA it just made sense. Right now what makes sense? The expensive equipment to play Blu-ray or HD-DVD, the expensive media to play in those players, the ungodly price tag on a plasma still or a lowly $20 dvd player and a television with a DVD that was bought at Wal-Mart for $5.50. The corporations vested in these technologies should probably focus on professional application before having dreams of every household having HD-DVD or Blu-ray compatability.

Samsung have talked about going dual format on several occasions
(and there is no love lost between them particularly since Sony publicly blamed all the early BD MPEG2 movie flaws on Samsung's BDP1000 player).

Pioneer too have spoken about producing dual format.

LG were the first to break the Blu-ray exclusive hardware manufacturing ranks, but they will not be the last, expect at least 1 and possibly 2 other manufacturers to do similar by the end of this year
(and other big names are rumoured to be heading that way in 2008/9 if their BD sales stay as dead/flat as they are now for much longer too).

The other Blu-ray consortium partners sunk a hell of a stack of money into R&D for BD only to see Sony then use that R&D & undercut the lot of them, rendering their own stand-alone products useless and bolted to the store shelves.

That will not be forgotten in a hurry.

They know only too well that they aren't making much - if any - money out of BD, watch them start going dual format later this year.

well i guess there would be some irony here with samsung and all, but just how many notebook manufacturers are offering something similar? i honestly don't know as i have no intention on buying a notebook any time soon. samsung could have very well have seen this is an opportunity to run with. $3k for a laptop is quite hefty, especially when i doubt their main focal point is centered around this. i can't imagine the market for such a device being really big. i doubt this would have a huge impact on the so called format war, especially if people think 600 bucks for a system is overpriced.

The expense of the equipment to play the formats will always be the deal breaker. Consumers had an extremely difficult time transitioning from the dying VHS to the DVD. Most retailers noticed that trend in which if they still offered VHS content some consumers that owned VCRs would not transistion from purchasing a VHS to a DVD. The final blow to VHS was when the major retailers discontinued their VHS cataloges. I am still not excited about either HD format but only hope that when the only discs available are those, the equipment to play them is cheap, the media itself is cheap and the rental stores carry the standard I own.

Beta WAS best. I started with one of the first Betmax players ($2000+)in Dallas in 1975. It would do 1 hr and the quality was as good as the broadcast. My wife wore it out in about 2 years and we bought a Super Betamax that would do 2 whole hours ( but the quality suffered). Then came VHS and the quality was TERRIBLE. In HiQual mode it was worse than the Beta in LP. Cheap beat quality because of the $$$ and now we have a house fully of VHS. It will happen again I bet ... so I have a X-Box 360 HD HDTV player ($199) and it is great! Call me Newbie and CARD ME,too. It makes me feel great.
