XM and Sirius address concerns over merger

5 March 2007 20:01 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 27 comments

XM and Sirius address concerns over merger Sirius and XM issued open letters to their customers this past week hoping to ease the minds of consumers who were anxious over their upcoming merger. In the letters, the companies assured that all radios and receivers would continue to work after the merger, and that the current monthly fee for current members would not be raised in any way.

During the weeks that followed the announcement of the proposed merger analysts of both companies began to contemplate that the monthly rates would increase and also that newer radio and receiver models would replace the current ones.

There does not seem to be any plans for major changes in the near future, although the letters do leave the opportunity open for rate increases for new customers as well as new radios that have added functionality for the merged company.

XM had this to say in a statement about the proposed merger: "Sirius has millions of radios in the market, including many that are built into the vehicles manufactured by its automakers...Following the merger, XM expects that the existing radios will be able to receive a mix of programming from both services."

XM had its letter published in the Monday edition of USA Today, while Sirius has begun a new iniative called the "Sirius Guarantee" which is being printed in national papers.

After the merger, which both sides hope to close by the end of this year (pending regulatory approvals), Sirius said it would most likely change the current $12.95 USD monthly fee to a more flexible structure that allows customers to pay for whatever select programming they choose to recieve.

Naw, I have an XM radio I have had it for over a year now & I love it! I can listen to the same NON static station from town to town I so service & spend MANY hours in a truck & it is nice to have something that can. just "Plug in" to a factory stereo with NO modifications! I have a standard AM/FM Tape deck & I just use my Tape adapter! ANY truck that I have ever driven has only has no more than this in it & i am not spending the $ to upgrade a truck that I may or may not be driving for a while. I can also go out of town on a road trip & listen to the same stations & now what they play instead of having to find stations where ever I go! Oh NO COMMERCIAL on most stations (all that I listen to!)
What about cross country truck drivers? The satellite thing is great! for the cost of 1 cd a month they can have all the up to date music! I often hear songs & even whole albums before my wife (who only has "Free" radio) ever hears! There will always be a market here for this now that it I established! Just like cable T.V.! the exact same situation here! tv used to be free now u pay 30-50+ a month for tv or as you say what used to be free!!!

The merger could be shot down, and really should be, our government is supposed to keep monopolies from happening. Now we know they will most likely approve this merger even though they should not.

Although it sounds good to have choices of the channels you want and not pay for the ones you don't want, this most probably will only cost you more in the long run and you'll still get channels you don't want.

Before XM struck a deal with DTV Serious was the #1 SAT providers for music. Now that people get XM whether they want it or not thru DTV possibly XM would be considered #1. Striking a deal with DTV was very smart on XM’s part.

HD Radio doesn't give you better sound quality but it is nice having the text display unfortunately you’re still plagued with advertisements and geeky disc jockey's. Pay radio still has some advertisements and geeky jock's but a lot less than free radio. Even though SAT radio is much better than commercially plagued FM I will give up my SAT radio if they jack us around like I believe they will, too bad I must say.

    I doubt it...
...the baby bells just got back together ,every other company its joining forces, the insurance industry is running around free from practical regulation ,the goverment is no longer in business for goverment its in business for business.

its funny they can raise rates by joining forces they should lower it by automatically by 30%.

I disagree about the sound quality, I personally think HD Radio sounds better then sattelite radio, it isn't quite as digital/airy sounding. But I still think SAT radio has a huge advantage over FM due to content and lack of commercials.

yea i have sirius and love it i listen to it at work all day from howard stern to the comedy stations like raw dog and so on......if the rates go up i might have to rethink my if i want to keep the service but i have a year an a half to worry about that so will see.....

I have had XM since they hit the market. I have enjoyed them so much. Latley they have offered more all the time. But with this merger i am starting to wonder. Rasing rates? That would not be a good thing. I already had to put up with one rate hike, but if they do it again i may just have to rethink my subscription.
Mr-Movies (Member) 6 March 2007 16:55 Send private message to this user
Well DarkJello I disagree back, I have a pretty good system with Klipsch Horns and surround sound of course, much better then the average bear and I'm sorry FM just doesn't even come close to SAT especially if you have an optical (digital) connection. FM is way too airy for my liking. My portable SAT tuner isn't the best though I get a slight 60 cycle hum with it, the AC adapter is at fault there and on my system it's a bit annoying. But the bottom line is less crap'ola between tunes on SAT!
DarkJello (Senior Member) 6 March 2007 17:07 Send private message to this user
I completely agree that sat is better, by far. I listen to SAT [both XM and Sirius] in the car, as well as HD radio. I just think the HD radio sounds a little fuller, having a strong antenna like that in a car could prove the difference between your setup and mine.

I've had XM since they started broadcasting. I was thinking that if they raise their prices i'd have to re-think my subscription also, then i realized that would mean driving around listening to commercial radio, I don't think i could go back at this point.

So who paid for your CD collection? Someone did :^C

Even if you only paid for blank CDs, someone paid for the LEGAL copy.

How illegal does something have to be before it's too illegal for me?
    Think about it...

My point was either way your paying for music, I wasn't implying your a 'pirate' I buy a lot of CD's [I'm around the 500 mark] but I like SAT because its a fun, easy way to discover new bands and songs, or old bands and old songs for that matter.

DarkJello, yeah if i didn't work 50 to 60 hours a week and was in an environment that i could listen to sat. radio i would probably enjoy it

HD radio may be a nice idea, but they are still subject to the antiquated rules and regulations of the good old FCC. Therefore, you really can't hear comedy channels or even a DJ talk like a real person using all the 7 forbidden words if he wants to. The music is chopped and edited. It's all about freedom people!
