NIN releases tracks on The Pirate Bay

Although new Nine Inch Nails content has been available online and free at their website, NIN.com for some time now, the band made an interesting announcement on their website yesterday. The brief announcement stated that the band was releasing three new tracks for download but that they would be available via torrent protocol and that the torrents had been uploaded to The Pirate Bay.

The Pirate Bay is and has been, one of the largest and most popular public torrent trackers and the defiance of the admins to bullying by the US entertainment industry has made the site a symbol of the torrent community.

The three songs released are "Capital G", "My Violent Heart" and "Me, Im Not", and NIN's decision to upload these tracks shows that at least one band understands the importance of torrents in reaching out to their target audiences.

nine inch nails has always made huge leaps for the music industry from being the first group to release albums in 5.1 audio to the whole concerts in HD. they will always stand for progression of thier music and the music industry. Trent Reznor understands that if it is good people will BUY and they will GOTO shows. considering most record labels are the ones to make the money not the bands when cds sell it doesn't hurt him any cause he owns his label, and they make far more off a single tour then all the record sales. Totally unrelated, other than another artist, Ice Cube also pulled away and has his own label and independently released his latest CD. I believe he is also one of the first go out on his own and thus, he will take in the profits and not a corporation that owns his contract. It will be very interesting to see what happens if more artists start doing this type of thing. [ + quote]

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade but what they released are not full retail songs, but rather raw audio tracks, I mean the guitars, the drum loops, the bass lines etc., that can be used for remixes and stuff. Of course 100% appreciation for their efforts. :) [ + quote]

What NiN has done is they released the songs for free on torrents. Thats what "blasphemy" meant by leading the way. [ + quote]
