Pioneer to release second gen Blu ray player

10 May 2007 9:18 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 6 comments

Pioneer to release second gen Blu ray player Pioneer has announced that soon they will be releasing their second generation Elite Blu ray disc player, dubbed the Elite BDP-94HD.

The player will be a follow up to the sucessful first gen player, the BDP-HD1, but will feature several key upgrades.

A few of the upgrades are a retooled user interface, support for internal decoding of Dolby TrueHD, and enhanced networking capabilities.

"This new player is a prime example of our dedication to exceptional quality, creating sights and sounds that leave an emotional impression for movie enthusiasts,"
said Chris Walker, senior manager of marketing and product planning at Pioneer Electronics. "A significant aspect to a quality home theater is convenience and this unit is designed to deliver high performance with minimal user effort for a premier entertainment experience."

The player is set to hit shelves later this month with a $1000 USD price tag. Pioneer also said that the player would come with 2 vouchers for free Blu ray movie discs but did not elaborate on which movies.

They are getting cheaper. The 1st gen Pioneer Elite BDP-HD1's MSRP was $1500. This second gen model is $500 cheaper. (Sorry - couldn't resist.) Anyway, I agree that this price point is still too expensive for most and will likely be of intersest only to diehard enthusiasts.

This is where HD DVD has the advantage of coming out with 2 or 3 models per gen with a cheaper entry level model and a "deluxe" or "elite" model for those who can afford it.

    I like pioneer products however.

Shouldn't this be a gift voucher and we can choose the movie we want.

I think these coupons are a non-issue. Anyone who can come up with the $1000 for this machine will have no problems coming up with the cash for several full price BluRay movies.

I suppose a drop to $1000 is better than before (but I wonder just how up to date this player will be considering the various BD specs and the hardware they have out now that will have problems complying with the Oct 2007 revision(s).......which, btw, are not the final end to this matter at all anyways).

It's also horrendous value when compared to the Toshiba HD A20 (which has full Dolby HD sound, internet connectivity and 1080p output) which is currently retailing on Amazon USA (from Amazon USA themselves so no iffy 'class 2 or 3 goods' there then) for $360 delivered.

Is this the new one with the fixes and stronger DRM capability?
    I really want one!
