Toshiba unveils HD DVD player and touchscreen LCD for cars

26 May 2007 13:05 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 6 comments

Toshiba unveils HD DVD player and touchscreen LCD for cars At the recent "Automotive Engineering Exposition 2007", Toshiba unveiled an automotive HD DVD player and a touch panel LCD.

The company said it is co-developing the player with Alpine Electronics and hopes the final product will hit shelves by 2008. Toshiba streamed video on the show and the results were positive although I find it hard to imagine that the 1080p was noticeable at such a small size.

The LCD was a prototype and has some interesting features. Toshiba has "integrated an optical sensor along with a transistor formed on each pixel on the panel. This technology enables the panel to detect the shadow of a finger when the panel is touched and work as a touch panel during the day. At night, the panel can sense finger touches using the backlight, which reflects when a finger touches the panel."

Toshiba hopes to have a final product for the touchscreen LCD by 2008 as well.

@cascadeuk
Mate the source link is there. That is where the story is from.

Now to the article. I find it pointless to have a quality screen for the car when u have to have your eyes on the road unless they stop and then watch and this would be a good addition if they put it on the back of the head rest.

Its not useless! Its for the people that have enough money to blow to buy a HDDVD player for their car so they can watch HDDVDs on a 5" screen.

If nothing else, the technique used to make the screen a touchscreen is pretty cool.
