BREIN claims to have shut down Demonoid

Written by Andre Yoskowitz (Google+) @ 28 Jun 2007 14:43 User comments (52)

BREIN claims to have shut down Demonoid BREIN, the Dutch copyright protection agency that has gone on a crusade to rid the Netherlands of "illegal" torrent sites, has claimed that they have taken down Demonoid, a private tracker that has grown in popularity the past few years.
Last week, BREIN got another victory when the site Everlasting.nu was forced to close down and the owner's personal details sent to the group. Apparently, BREIN was not happy enough and demanded that the hosting company, LeaseWeb, shut down Demonoid as well.

Users trying to log in yesterday could not as Demonoid was offline, and BREIN was quick to claim victory.

"This outcome demonstrates that the content on offer on large international p2p-sites such as Demonoid is mostly illegal. These kind of sites make use of content supplied by its customers",
says BREIN director Tim Kuik. "Sites like these do take the responsibility to refuse illegal pornographic material, but they do not care about the offer of evidently infringing content. That carelessness is calculated because they know that is exactly the content their users want. Many of such sites are hosted in the Netherlands and mainly by Leaseweb. Leaseweb is seen as a safe harbour for these sites. That has to come to an end. We have shown repeatedly that such sites are illegal under Dutch law and jurisprudence. We will continue to do so until none are left."

Demonoid however, give a different reason for the site being offline.

"We had a system problem which will force us to restore everything from backup,"
a post on Demonoid.com reads. "The disks are pretty much empty right now and until we are able to upload the backup and set up everything up, we have to close down. We'll be back as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Demonoid posted another message this morning that once again said the downtime was temporary and that BREIN had nothing to do with it.

"We were planning on returning online in the next few hours - probably tomorrow afternoon. But due some recent events, and following the advice of a lot of you, we will make a few more changes that might take a few days longer. As always, thanks for you continued support and patience. For the ones wondering, the timing of the downtime was coincidental."

These messages have lead many to believe that Demonoid is switching hosting companies but BREIN still feels that LeaseWeb will be held responsible.
"If it turns out that Leaseweb does not have reliable information about its clients' identity then it attracts the liability for such damages."

UPDATE: Seems Demonoid is back up, just as they promised.

THE END IS NEAR. The golden age of the internet, that is.

Demonoid is the "golden age" of the net?? I see it as the worst wannabe private tracker on the face of the earth! Buh bye!

328.6.2007 15:21

Demonoid is a public tracker. It's torrents are indexed by many other sites. The registration is to keep traffic down on the demonoid servers themselves. Yet another anti-piracy group saying it was their doing that it went down. It's like a accidental explosion, then terrorists claim they did it.

428.6.2007 16:46

Well if this one goes down it is just an amount of time before another pops up.

I feel these guys will be back online very soon.

528.6.2007 17:17

Svtstang how can you say demonoid was a bad tracker? It was a fine example of well run, well functioning site. Many would agree with me.

628.6.2007 17:32

seriously, Demonoid is like one of my favorite.

728.6.2007 17:44

I'm going to go with the coincidence story, I think it will be a while before Demonoid will be taken down.

828.6.2007 17:55

I have seen many M$ torrents on their including the recent "Vista" leak that doesn't require a CD-Key (a news article was posted on this site about it, but I don't remember when). If Microsuck couldn't shut down Demonoid I don't think some dutch agency could either. They might temporarily take them offline but I see Demonoid as something similar (although a TON better!) to TPB.

They can't kill it no matter how hard they try, hope to see it up and running again real soon!

Peace

I have been to a few torrent sites and feel Demonoid was one of the easiest and user friendly sites around. I already miss it tremendously. Anyone have any suggestions for an alternative site? Along with an invite please?

1028.6.2007 19:01

do NOT ask for invites, thank you.

And I have to agree with Stang, demonoid is bottom of the barrel as far as private/semi private trackers go.

Demonoid is an ok site for me. It's got a lot of stuff, but I hate how everything is listed and everything.

It did get me an ausome copy of windows(legit key too).

And many dont know their ass from their face! Demonoid is one of the worst trackers on the net, take it or leave it.

Answer me this then. Why is demonoid, the "awesome," "l33t," tracker it is being taken down? Seems like the tracker wasnt on top of its game!

The RIAA will find a sh!+ load of pirated Grateful Dead concerts being sold on both craigslist and EBAY. Thieves are actually downloading tracks, burning bootleg CDs and creating false names for their new live albums. Some are up for auction and others are for sale outright. This is one helluva lot more illegal than just downloading music from a torrent site and using it only for personal enjoyment.

Carey Sherman and his copyright gestapo agents are so damned smart! They can't even see, more serious criminal violations of their copyright laws, by thieves who do it to make money...

Well they still havnt got it back up, ive just done a trace route and:

20ge-chnl.amsix.nkf.leaseweb.net

it would appear the dns is still resolving to leaseweb, its more likely brein forced leaseweb to delete content rather than suspend hosting.

looking at whois:

Name Server: NS1.DEMONOID.COM
Name Server: NS2.DEMONOID.COM
Name Server: NS3.DEMONOID.COM
Name Server: NS4.DEMONOID.COM
Name Server: NS5.DEMONOID.COM

Which all traceback to leaseweb, so if they did made dns mods its not populated yet or hasnt been made at all.

1729.6.2007 2:51

I personally quite like Demonoid, Im not saying its "awesome," "l33t," but its was always one of my first places to go when I needed something. Why the hell does everyone consider it so bad?

The tracker, like every other server/tracker out there needs to be upgraded when they get increased amounts of traffic, now that the site can hardly be considered private it has a huge amount of users uploading a huge amount of data, so the reasons for downtime should be quite obvious really.

1829.6.2007 3:39

Persoanly i ahve never used demoniod, because i ain't a user, but i use http://scrapetorrent.com/ which is liek uber amazing, it searchs liek all the torrent sites and gives you the best results.

Personally i see nothign wrong with downloading music, illegally because i put somethign back into the music industry, the gig industry, and frankly CD sales kill the gig industry! Which persoanlly is much much better then just buy a CD.

Yeah, what is your problem with Demonoid? You aren't being clear about that... You're just aimlessly bashing. If you were to say, perhaps, that Demonoid sucks because it has little privacy, I could agree with you: Demonoid is one of the least secret/private trackers available.

On the flipside, it does (did?) have a lot of easily accessable content and many users.

Geez, Stang... Maybe some of us don't spend our entire lives on our PC searching for "l33t, ownage, super-secret, trackers." Just chill out man. It was a good site for many people.

???? Just because I point out I will not miss it and say that the tracker is nothing special I get flamed?? Yeah, that makes sense. Lets not start a war......or actually let us :)

By the way, learn how to use quotes!

@Moomoo

1.Since you mentioned it, LITTLE PRIVACY

2.Seed/leech ratio is total trash. Uploaders have like 28k dial up connections. Nothing like needing 104930492 seeds to max out connection.

3.The majority of crap can be dl'd even if you arnt a member (LOL like signing up for it to be tracked by Demonoid is better....not).

4.No banning dirty leeches. They say they do, but in reality dont.

5.LITTLE PRIVACY, there have been anti-p2p on that site for months if not years, if you dont believe me do some research.

Why such anger at my comments?? Last time I checked I am allowed to say whatever the hell I want. My opinions are just those, my opinions.

edit

Thanks for fixing that sloppy quote job LOL! Was hurting my head :P

What the heck? They are claiming credit?! Ya right! They would have put that out as soon as they took it down, not after people began to realize it was. Also, the site has been down for several days now. It annoyed the crap outta me as I had to go to some other site.

Oh, also, about the little feud going on about the site(NOT taking any sides):
1. Svtstang, I did sense a little hostility at first when you popped back with "And many dont know their *** from their face" in response to the other guy's comment.
2. Poncho73, what? "Put up or shut up" doesn't make any sense.
3. Back to Svtstang, Those are your opinions that you are entitled to. But if you just say them without giving support for the reason you are inclined to that opinion, then some people will get all pissed of and flame, starting a flame war.
I'm not trying to be bias or anything, this is just what I observed.

As a side note to Svtstang, thats a cool pic in your sig. Also, would you care to elaborate on what sites those abreaviations are for? If demonoid is the crap you guys claim it to be, I would like to see the better sites.

2729.6.2007 12:38

I am going a little nuts without howard tv... can someone pm me with a site I can get the new episodes now that the demon is down?

2829.6.2007 13:47

I thought Demonoid was a great site.

As with most sites everything is catigorized, applications/movies ect....but the best thing I thought was the comments from the members. Before you downloaded a movie, you could check the comments just to make sure the the movie was in sync and so on.

If you downloaded or were going to dl an application, you can read the comments to make sure it worked propperly or leave a comment if it didn't work propperly for you.

Just my opinion, but I thought it was/is an excellent site and hopefully it's back up and running soon.

Ok guys, lets keep this little flame war to a minimum please :)

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and Stang has his. I happen to agree with him for many reasons.
1. There is NO privacy at that site.
2. Demonoid links can be found on any public tracker.
3. Speeds are slow :P
4. Variety is decent at best.

@Weirdname,
He made those abbreviations because the sites are so private that they send spiders out to find anyone who writes their names in public forums, then they ban them from the site. TRUE story.

And yes, I agree Stang has a nice sig, i wonder who made it :P

Lemme guess... you?(EDIT- about who made the sig)
And can I at least get a PM about the names of those, or at least one of those, sites? Even if the PMs can be tracked, they could just split the name up or put dashes between words or whatever. Also, what about ISOhunt? I use it when I can't find something on demonoid.

Isohunt is just another public tracker, similar to demonoid. Dvd is 100% right, he knows very well that naming those sites is forbidden, and will result in an instant ban when (and trust me, you will get caught) admin from one of the sites finds out you are spamming their site.

Bottom line is, to each their own. I have listed reasons why I feel the tracker sucks, take it or leave it. You guys can continue to use trackers such as demonoid, I prefer to use much more private and secure sites (for non copyrighted material of course!!).

@Dvd

Stop taking credit for the awesome sig I MADE!!!! :P Hahahaa im sure I will hear about that one later on :/

Its SVTstang, with a G. As for getting in fights with newbies, no offense SVT but I kinda agree. The newbs seem to be fanboys so the only winner of the inevitable fight will be the one that doesn't get banned.

Not that i use bit torrent anyway bit i think your right mate, its moved off leaseweb and onto a company called teleglobe.net who appear to be in Montreal.

I can smell a large rotten fish there, as the sites owner wont even comment on brein let alone given a good reason for the down time or the move from hosting company.

I would keep well away.

504.7.2007 14:40

Just noticed myself that it is back up, but like the lot of you, i doubt i will use it again, only because it seems a little skeptical about what is going on. kind of fishy like everyone's been talking about.

but it was good when i used it, found stuff i couldn't locate elsewhere, but oh well, hopefully all info will come to light.

Updated the article, but I will say it one last time. Keep it on topic!

5216.7.2007 8:13

I don't understand the negative attitudes towards Demonoid. It's a great clean bittorrent site that offers a lot of special content that other sites like mininova or the pirate bay don't. Especially their comic section is superior to everything else I've seen.

Also, the negative attitude towards the Dutch is easy to understand. I live in Holland, so I am Dutch, but the people here are real bastards. They have one of the biggest free societies in the world, but they simply can't handle it. All they do is use and abuse. They are spoiled and decadent, but in the end it will bite them/us in the ass.
