China closed down 60,000 pornography sites in 2010 Wang Chen, deputy head of China's propaganda department has revealed some interesting figures this week, including how many pornography sites were taken down in the nation last year.
Chen says:
By November, 350 million pieces of harmful information, including text, pictures and videos, had been deleted. There was a notable improvement in the online cultural environment.

In an effort to remove objectionable content from the Internet, the government checked 1.79 million websites and ended up shutting down 60,000 pornography sites.

5000 citizens were arrested for spreading the porn, and 1332 received "criminal punishment." 58 of those are currently serving 5 year (or longer) prison sentences.

There are currently over 400 million Internet users in China, by far the biggest online population in the world.

China has long blocked Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook and recently announced Skype will be banned soon, as well.

..call me old fashioned, but turning your own children into crunchy strawberry jam using tanks tends to negate any moral value in closing down dirty pics sites.

China, due to it being Communist, is almost an entirely different world from Britain or the United States. In China whatever the government says you have to live by or face the punishment. Rebelling against it (at all) will get you thrown in jail or killed.

Instead of hating the world you live in, just appreciate the country you live in that allows you to say what you want, when you have something to say.

People in Glass Houses (or large towers) shouldn't throw stones...
remember My Lai massacer, Guantanamo Bay, Bombing of Tehran for WMD's, invasion of Afghanistan.
As long as China is not INVADING my country, or forcing their DMCA rules on me, let it be.

apparently china isnt a communist country anymore, but someone forgot to tell the government.
The only reason they have over 400million internet users is because they are the most populated country in the world and have over 400million people.
I dont agree with some of the laws in other countrys but i dont have to live there so it doesnt bother me.

"Wanna see child porn? Join the vice squad."

The guys screening this must be the most "Harmful" people in the world.

The good news is that the government is strangling the economy. This is very hard to do given the slave labor and lackluster corporate controls that make China such a great place to make things like the iPhone...but the government is still doing their best to ensure that no one learns enough to become an engineer, inventor, artist, or anything else except a factory floor slave...and that gives the free world (or the less-enslaved world) a chance.

Anyone else find it ironic that a guy named Wang announced this crackdown on porn?
