Download assistants are typically browser extensions that offer file download capabilities beyong browser's own integrated capabilities.

Typically download assistants allow splitting the downloaded file into several "threads" -- a process that very often speeds up the file downloads rather significantly. Some download assistants can also look up for alternative download sources (aka mirrors) for the file, to speed up the download process and also to ensure the availability of the file.
