9.1.  How Do I Play AVI Files?
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a container video format. This means that it just specifies how audio and video streams should be stored within the file, it doesn't specify how they should be encoded. Therefore different AVI files often need different codecs to play back properly. The DivX and XviD codecs are probably the most popular codecs that are required to play a large portion of the AVI files available for download online.

IMPORTANT: These instructions are a few years old. However, we have a newer, more detailed and eloquent set of instructions for AVI files in our Guides section. Click here to read our proper How to play AVI files article.

There is a way to check which codecs you need for the audio and video streams in an AVI file, that is by using AviCodec. Download it now and install it.

Once it is installed, run it and click the Select button. Now locate the AVI file and open it. You will receive information that looks like the screenshot below.

Look at the information that is given. It is PAL video (25fps) and it requires an XviD codec to play back properly. The audio says AC3 DVM. This is Dolby Digital audio. In order to play this correctly with video players such as Windows Media Player, AC3Filter needs to be installed. The following things from the AfterDawn download section would be needed to play this file back..

Koepi's XviD codec - This is needed to play the video.
AC3Filter - This is needed for the AC3 audio.

Quite often you will also get files with MP3 audio or DivX video. DivX 6 should be a something everybody has installed. You can get it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/divx_play.cfm

A recommended solution to most codec problems is FFDShow, a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing several video formats, including DivX , XviD , WMV , MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 movies.

So if you have an AVI file that you cannot play, check it with AviCodec. If the problem persists, then visit our Discussion Forums and seek help there.
