YouTube under fire for Neo-Nazi clips in Germany

28 August 2007 20:42 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 18 comments

YouTube under fire for Neo-Nazi clips in Germany Once again Google Inc.'s YouTube service is once again being criticized for hosting content uploaded by its users that is considered offensive or inappropriate. This time, the video-sharing giant is taking fire for hosting clips that allegedly incite racial hatred. Report Mainz aired a program on German TV about the situation, which showed YouTube hosts videos such as "Jud Suess", a 1940 anti-Semitic propaganda film and music videos from outlawed German rock band Landser that depict Nazi military operations.

Social Democrat (SPD) parliamentarian Dieter Wiefelspuetz said distributing the clips on YouTube was scandalous and he was quoted as saying, "publishing these films amounts to aiding and abetting incitement of the people," - a potentially dangerous mindset to apply to a public user-driven video service like YouTube.

Germany's Central Council of Jews Vice President Salomon Korn is also considering pressing charges against Google Germany. German youth protection body Jugendschutz.net has apparently complained to Google Germany more than 100 times to remove the clips - some of which have been on the site for almost a year.

uh don't we all have the right to hate people too? if its not hurting anyone who fudging cares? I hate everyone already anyway, does that mean I can't make a youtube video with me saying I HATE YOU, GO DIE BEFORE I KILL YOU!!... I have the right, no ones being tied to a chair and having their eye lips held open to watch the videos.

Its like my mom going to see a rated R movie with blood and gore and getting upset about it and then complaining that such a movie existed and was available for her to see.

DOES EVERYONE NEED THEIR WORLD TO BE COVERED BY CENSOR BARS?? People need to grow their own balls.

they should'nt take down offensive material even though i don't agree with what the nazi are into, they stil have the right to freedom of speech.

Unfortunately, freedom of speech is just a stupid laugh, an empty phrase. As soon as there is the first sign of "yeah you can say whatever you want EXCEPT this and this and this..." I can't call it freedom of speech anymore. I call it censorship. I know that horrible things happened to the Jews in the past, but people have every right to talk about it and show their opinion! That's what freedom of speech would be all about, but if you do it you WILL be sued, just because a small group of people (headed by Mr. Solomon Korn and the likes) decided they are above all others and can control what we talk about and what we don't. What's worse, they do it with government backing in most countries on this poor planet.

YouTube should stand it's ground and let these oversensitive idiots know where their place is.

It's not offensive its what actually happened, is Saying "Germany Lost The War" offensive? it's fact, it's also fact that these people need to grow up and smell what there shoveling they make it worse by perpetuating this and claiming its the worst thing Since Hitler.

    Anyway, My views :)

If someone paints an offensive picture, do you arrest the canvas maker for making the canvas that allowed them to paint something offensive?

Or do you chase the freakin painter??

    Come on now.

Howard Stern said the same thing, if you don't like what he says, don't listen to him.

If I type "Nazi" in Google, I fully expect to see Hitler and the entire SS squad smiling back at me.

Doesn't YouTube have some kind of TOS agreement for using their site?

I don't support Neo-Nazi's. I don't support racist's. But such content has been around for ages..and labelled accordingly. Neither is it predominantly associated with Germany or white racial supremacy groups.

    Let adults be the judge.

If you really do want to see something sick, something dangerous..let the state dictate what you see, what you hear..take the choice away from adults and place it firmly in the hands of a corporate policy. This is how wars start, not through stupid separatist propaganda.

It is my right as an adult to watch this material and comment on it..it is my right to use it for educational purposes. It is my responsibility.

Seems like a policy of 'If I don't like it - ban it!'

I question why these pillars of the community only emerge now, and only with THIS material. It is also a pity they don't focus their attentions a little closer to home. The whole world does not revolve around them, and neither should it be forced to.

lilfree22, I think that's far too much a logical, straightforward approach. Unfortunately such common sense is, I feel, generally at odds with litigation culture.

I feel that the premise of 'in case it offends' allows self-important individuals or corporations to implement their own moral code, and avoid having to justify their own reasoning. That’s dangerous.

Thats not litigation culture its PCisim, the politically correct nazis want to take away out freedom and choice to make a world thats fair and equal to all but the "masters of humanity".

Its the laws job to thump foolishness by setting president and showing a common sensecail reason why the law is in place and why it should not be so easily screwed with, this is true for any nation/goverment.

The more they say remove the offenders from the light the more offensce in thigns they will find in life they do not wish to see.

this madness must end...there are no cookies where its taking us......only cakes...made from ground teeth....and you dun want to know what the icing is made from !!

For all the fanboys out their.
