Nintendo to fight rampant DS piracy in South Korea

18 September 2007 9:32 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 25 comments

Nintendo to fight rampant DS piracy in South Korea Nintendo, in an effort to curb rampant piracy in South Korea of its DS handheld games, has asked South Korean prosecutors to investigate into domestic web sites that they claim have illegally been uploading copies of the games.

Nintendo's Korean unit filed a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, in which it charges that web operators are freely allowing the illegal uploading of pirated copies of DS games.

“Nintendo will take further measures if copyright violations continue,”
the company said.

In the eight months the DS Lite has been available in South Korea, it has reached sales of over 500,000 according to Nintendo.

This event also marks the first time Nintendo has asked prosecutors in Asia for assistance in fighting piracy. It has been actively fighting in Europe and the US.

The DS is like the Gamecube. A big let down.... To me anyways. I haven't touched mine in like a year or so... there's just nothing to compare to the PSP, which I also have and play on the daily. The only thing that the DS does better then the PSP is sell, which sucks but it is cheaper afterall...

the main reason ds sell more is cuz it's easy for a parents to buy (cheaper ,no Memory stuick needed wich means $30 or $40 extra), cuz Ds is mostly for kids under 7 or 8 cuz they want to play a videogame, they don't know what they think it's cool it's really not. And that is true
I worked in Mcdonalds in the drivetruh and i saw ds in the hands of kids, and a Psp on kids that looked like 10 or 11 + ++ . plus we had a family reunion the other day the Ds's where in the back all my llittle cousins where carzy aout the psp's started playing and all. ppl buy ds cuz they are ignorants

I totally disagree with you guys above. I have both the psp and ds lite. I like the lite more. Reason is it has better games. The psp i have not touched for like months. I work at subway and when its slow i take the ds vs the psp anyday. I just cant seem to get a psp game that can attract me or bring me back to using it. I only like street fighter and thats bout it for the psp. I rather play ds mario, tetris, and other games. But the ds is cheaper but i didnt have no problem buying both units at all. So if you guys can tell me some games to play for the psp so i can pick it back up and put it to use please let me know!!!

Those are my top 2... I'd list more but I don't know what you like. If you just mod your PSP with a 4GB memory stick, you can just get any game you want, plus any game up to PS1(except N64, Saturn and Dreamcast) with emus. You don't need an emu for ps1 games though...

I love my ds, how can you get tired of bomberman, tetris, mario kart, and many more. It's the multiplayer value that gets me. Playing a shootem up multiplayer on a psp doesn't really interest me.

I would buy a DS just for mario kart. That game looks so cool on the DS.

I myself have a PSP. It does good, still wish those Nintendo titles were on the PSP tho. Mario Mini-games are sick!

You guys are awfully hard on us DS owners. I am well educated AND socially adept AND I love my DS, lol! I havn't played the PSP to compare but that's not what this story is about. I enjoy playing many of the Nintendo franchises that you can't get on the PSP. There are also many homebrew programs to muck around with, as with the PSP. AS for this story, there are many places to DL .nds files that may or may not be based in southeast Asia.

Seriously guys, I have a had DS since Mario Kart landed and I still find myself trying to master just about any game that comes out for DS. I also want to mention I am 25 and have many friends in their late 20's that own the DS and not the PSP. The only reason to buy a PSP is to mod it and run emu's and roms. No one actually buys PSP games or moves.

As for the DS, there are so many good titles, I can't believe you would knock the system. I understand that for many of you blood, guts and gore lovers with a shallow devotion to FPS games, Mario, Metroid, Zelda, etc. may not float your boat.

Well im 28 and the person above me is 25. So you cant really say its little kids buying a ds cause mommy wont spend the cash. Believe me now at days the way kids are parents wil spend any amount of money to please a kid. I know there is parents out there spending 600 bucks for a ps3 or even 400 for xbox 360 guys so dont say its the ds price that makes it sell. Thats just one fact. But i will give those 2 titles a try on my psp. The psp is still cool though and i have a 3.03 oe-c which is the last time used it so i can imagine im out of date on my firmware. Thats how long i haven't used my psp for....

What can I say, I love my DS as well..tried the PSP but was so bored that I sold it, not to mention the only way to make the psp fun is to get 4gb of memory and get some custom firmware on it...my DS has an R4 with 1gb and you cant beat the fun factor...imo :)

DS is weak and is for children under 10.

the PSP is for people that like homebrew and want
    at least ps1.5 style graphics.

the psp has alot more going for it than the DS.
can't believe this is even in this topic.

its about pirated crap DS games. who cares anyways.
lets not talk about DS vs PSP qualities. cause... its obvious

PSP is better. and im far from a Sony fanboy. mostly everything sony makes, breaks

huh? There are actual DS players in Korea? o_O i thought everyone over there is addicted to online games & plays w/their PC all day. no time to play DS games when your PSP takes up 23 hours of the day. 1 hr for bathroom breaks, then back to W.O.W.

Piracy on the DS is kind of a weird issue. I own an M3 "movie player," and it makes my DS soooo much more useful. instead of lugging a bunch of cartridges around, I can just carry my DS and all the games/movies/music/roms whatever I want. The thing is, I have been turned on to several awesome DS games that I might not have bought otherwise, but I haven't actually bought any of them because I don't actually want the physical cartridges; I just want the games...

The DS is the better gaming system while the PSP is the better media system, being 90 cheaper the DS dose better but in the end the games is what makes it sale.

BTW is well within my fair use rights to get a device I can pipe 10 of MY games to.

Sorry but the DMCA breaks fair sue laws and thus breakes itself so until they update it to be within the law I will ignore it like all the 50+year old laws on the books that are ignored because they are stupid, they are the law but they are stupid laws like sodomy(zomg teh gays),prematail sex(zomg sex!),wicca convents (zomg pagans!),vibrators(zomg sex!) and porn(zomg sex..kinda!).

For all the console/game fanboys out their.
