CRIA allegedly shuts down Demonoid

25 September 2007 19:50 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 77 comments

CRIA allegedly shuts down Demonoid Demonoid, the very popular torrent tracker, has allegedly been taken down by CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) as users have noticed that both the tracker and the website have been down for at least the last 24 hours.

Although Demonoid and CRIA have yet to deny or confirm the reports it is definitely a possibility that Demonoid's new Canadian ISP shut the site down after being pressured by CRIA. Recently, the ISP said it would pull the plug on Demonoid if it received complaints.

This would be the second time in recent memory that Demonoid has had major downtime, the last time being when it was still based in the Netherlands. The Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN asked the web host Leaseweb to take Demonoid down and hand over the admin's personal information but Demonoid relocated to Canada before anything could come of it.

It seems likely now that Demonoid will have to relocate again, or stay offline and be another huge blow to the BitTorrent community.

I miss it also, you were able to go on the forums and get help within the hour and at least you can see sometimes the picture of the file you are downloading. But I am Canadian and probably won't be able to get back in Demonoid again.

On top of that, everyone that got a copy would then make copies for their friends, usually for free. They will never get it through their thick heads that there is no practical way to stop people from sharing. LOL!!!
If they were smart and really wanted to stop P2P they would reduce their outrageous prices to the point where people would not go to the trouble of downloading anything.

This is true if they would drop the prices of movies and CD's they would probably have less sharing and more buying. I wanted to buy my daughter the new Hannah Montana CD and it was $25 plus tax why pay that much and some day it will come down or on sale. I am not paying that much for a CD that will probably be listened to a few time and tossed in the old music corner in her room. These company's are nothing but greedy cry babies.

Demonoid is apparently back up, but unfortunately for us Canadians it is not. Canadian IP's are being blocked:

We received a letter from a lawyer represeting the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and We need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. If you reside in Canada, that is the reason you are being redirected to this message. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.
That's what the website posts when I surf there.

I'm sure there's like an IP scrambler that will unblock it for you mate.

I'm sure I've heard of stuff that can get around it. Search around.

Always remember mate, Pirates and Hackers are always one step ahead of filthy little officials.

I don't know any mate, and I'm not one of these experts at hacking and computers and stuff.

I've always learned from where I've been stuck.

Like in your case, if I couldn't get into Demonoid, I'd learn how, and that's where my computer knowledge comes from.

I would love to be a demon on computer, but I'm probably too dull lol.

It's right in the rules... that people are supposed to read before clicking "agree."

Anyways, to anyone who REALLY wants to get in, just put the registration page, home page, whatever in your start page list if you have a browser with tab browsing. If you don't have a browser with tab browsing, GET ONE. At any one time I can easily have 20 pages open with only one browser but I digress. Eventually you will one day look at the page that says "registration open."

Being a Canadian user, I was very disappointed to find that this site is no longer available to us in Canada. It was very reliable, the community was great, and the quality of the torrents was unmatched in my opinion.

I've been having to search for new avenues of getting my media fix now and am not as satisfied.

twice in here I have seen "No invite trading"

Maybe i'm confused, but giving someone an invite code for free, dosen't seem like trading to me, and if i did give someone an invite code it would be done in a PM.

we mods can't see what goes on in PM's, however we are concerned with Invite Trading on the public forums

snippet from the Forum Rules -

    Invites to private sites

Requesting for or offering invites to private sites (such as private torrent trackers or similar private P2P sites) is not allowed. This rule has been requested by several private site administrators, and we honor their request. (Penalty: 2 day ban)

Nope. In fact, it's even more obvious this time around that it's not gone, than when the above news statement was made.
