Major piracy market raid in Argentina

On October 2nd, 2007, several search warrants were executed in the infamous "La Salada" market area in the province of Buenos Aires. The searches were carried out by a Special Tactical Operations Unit consisting of 300 police officers from the Gendarmer�a, Argentina's equivalent of a Homeland Security Agency. The raids led to the seizure of about 136,067 recorded CD-Rs.

Police officers also seized 273 burners, 8.6 million in-lays, 45,000 jewel boxes and 120,000 blank CD-Rs and made four arrests. La Salada is well known for its diverse pirating activities that include retail sales, wholesale distribution and replication labs. The authorities had already identified some organized crime syndicates that were in control of the market.

"We offer congratulations to the Argentine authorities and our national group Apdif Argentina for a job well done. More than one in three CDs sold worldwide is a pirate disc and we need to continue to crack down on the problem of music piracy," Raul Vazquez, IFPI Regional Director for Latin America.

music problem is online, anyway here in peru it's worse nodoby buys original no more. the copies are only 1 dollar each while original cd's are running for 20 or 25 no match there [ + quote]

You know, that's a big problem with our public discourse today: 25 years of radical right dominance of any debate whereby we have had nonsensical noise crammed up our...crammed down our throats, it is now perfectly acceptable to elevate anything including lies (yes, Virginia, lies) to the same level as truth. You then get to call yourself "fair and balanced." Based on your statement, it would be perfectly acceptable to you any sort of hogwash then say, "shrug... take it up with the press release." Don't you have any sort of responsibility to report the obvious underpinnings of the statements (or the lack thereof)that you print? Or do stories claiming the world is flat or the moon is of green cheese to be given equal weight and prominence with serious study, science, and research? You (and even I) have been conditioned to give the same weight to lies as to the truth then back off and shrug and tell anyone that dares to question the veracity of your (our) report, "Hey, man... I'm just tell in' you what somebody said." In the marketplace of ideas, when lies are given the same value as truth... it reduces the value of everything to worthlessness. Thus, everyday, fewer and fewer thinkers bother even entering the market. Unfortunately, there are many groups and individuals that quite pleased by that. These numbers are small in number to compare because the issue is much bigger and needs to be changed if they want to stop piracy they have to adapt to new technology and the way things progress. [ + quote]
