TiVo to offer lifetime service plan for holidays

12 November 2007 14:31 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 6 comments

TiVo to offer lifetime service plan for holidays TiVo Inc. is to bring back its lifetime service plan for the crucial holiday season. Its customers pay a monthly service charge currently, which when combined with the cost of the cable service, can be a drawback and a reason to settle for DVR's provided by Cable companies. However, amid reports that cable providers will be making DVRs incapable of skipping commercials, interest in TiVo is growing again.

TiVo's current monthly plan stands at $16.95 and a three-year pre-paid plan costs $299. It is behind reported that during the holiday season, TiVo will be offering a lifetime plan for a fee of $399. The plan, with time, could save customers a decent amount of money.

Another selling point for a TiVo DVR is the ability to expand its storage capacity and not have top worry too soon about how large your recorded library has grown.

W/ Time? As someone who does not own a TiVo device, does this mean I would have TiVo service for life if I make the "big" one-time purchase and set-up an account or is the "lifetime" plan tied to the TiVo unit I may purchase this holiday?

I have a tivo but I'm not willing to upgrade to a lifetime plan if it's locked to unit. Now if they would allow you to switch it say 2 times to a new unit if an old one breaks then i might consider it. Electronics devices don't last as long as they should now a days.

yes, and yes the account is tied to the TiVo unit. Every TiVo I have ever gotten since then TIVO offers me to switch my lifetime service to the new one which is nice. That doesn't mean they always will but i've never had a problem switching it over. I've had my lifetime sub for over 3 years now and it's saved me a ton and continues to save me lots of money with this new HD TiVo I got :)

It is indeed locked to the unit, and hard coded onto the motherboard. On the other hand, I've replaced the hard drive twice on my series 1 TIVO (about 7 years old)and it still works great. The lifetime subscription has saved me a lot of cash even with the cost of the new drives.

all this is is a marketing gimick so that they can make monet and attract a lot of subscribers during the holiday period.
