Update: Pirate Bay loses IFPI domain

30 November 2007 11:43 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 26 comments

Update: Pirate Bay loses IFPI domain In October, we reported that The Pirate Bay had somehow obtained the IFPI.com domain name and was using it to create the "International Federation of Pirate Interests". The IFPI is, of course, the industry trade group the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

TBP obtained the domain because the IFPI neglected to renew it and an anonymous individual picked it up and donated it to TPB. After the news hit the group, they quickly filed a complaint with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), requesting that the domain be returned to its previous owners. It seems that WIPO has ordered TPB to return the domain, and there is little that the admins at TPB can do about it.

"For all the foregoing reasons, in accordance with Paragraphs 4(i) of the Policy and 15 of the Rules, the Panel orders that the domain name, be transferred to the Complainant."

It was fun while it lasted.

Wow you know your slow when you don't understand this...

I'm just sayin' that if Demonoid is gone for GOOD then TPB would probably bring it back up since it is/was such a popular site, one I used almost everyday. If they were to bring it back up, IFPI thing is one less distraction.

Don't get me wrong, I used it for pinch situations but
Demonoid was overcrowded and under run, it sucked as far as trackers go, people upping stuff and not properly describing them, slow seeds, allowing anyone to up I probably got about 80 or 90 gigs of ntsc that actually turned out to be pal.. Find a real site that actually keeps track of ratio and doesn't allow hit and runners and allows a certain few to u/l.. I would list a bunch for you but if you cannot find them then you shouldn't own a pc

So what you're saying is you downloaded a massive 50gb torrent and after 2 weeks of waiting all the seeds left and you cried? At this point you also realize that the entire content of the files you were downloading was Swedish television commercials and that you got royally boned.

    THAT'S CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They let it expire. This is no different then those that let their insurance expire. I should know. If you have an accident during an insurance lapse, I can damn well guarantee that YOU WON'T BE COVERED. Same with this..............it lapsed and someone else jumped to the opportunity. Priorities are seriously outta whack in this world. Some head-up-your-arse decision maker saw fit to correct a situation that they felt should be corrected for no reason other than that the victim is a copyright enforcer, yet when people's freedom and lives are on the line for a crime that the evidence overwhelmingly suggests they DID NOT commit, they are convicted if there isn't anyone else to point to finger to. It's obvious that those behind the 'big red button that decides the fate of us all' (i.e. FCC, politicians, cops) are the worst choices ever. Money talks and the interests of the community as a whole and fairness are simply runners-up.

It's not demonoid's fault you failed to check the comments, or get things from reliable uploaders.

Anyways this is quite stupid. TPB obtained the domain through a completely legal process. I am surprised TPB doesnt fight this with there reputation for arguing with copyright owners and such.

funny how legislation works so fast when it comes to something like this, but funny how legislation is slow when it comes to important issues of value.. I think they should have been allowed to keep it. They picked it up when it was legal to do so. I think it happened this quick because it was a blatant slap in the face at corporations/government policies. If this was a dispute by some guy and some domain name it would be left up to the parties involved to solve it, not outside influence.

    They owned it.. full stop..

I complained when I forgot to renew my domain for 48 hours and somebody else bought it...

Did I get it back.. HELL NO!!! so why the hell should any other person/business/government. I hope they get whatever was paid for it refunded, so they can refund the generous benefactor.. otherwise that is just plain theft... Now why does that sound familiar???

those guys probably sended a couple chicks to the judge, this is unfair tpb should have been able to keep it since they got it legally

    Two comments:
    1. How could the WIPO legally order TPB to give IFPI.com back to IFPI?! They didn't renew their claim to it so it was fair game. So if TPB didn't renew their domain name and IFPI took it, WIPO would order IFPI to return the name to TPB? I highly doubt it.

    2. Why are you guys still talking about demonoid? That's a way different topic that has been covered in several news threads already.

TPB don't get to keep it for some sort of legality thing it's just the way it is,you've most probably heard of businesses having to change their name or a product because it's similar too or looks like an already estabilished company's logo, product, name etc ,that said you can imagine the shock when TBP registered The IFPI's very own trade name the looks on all the big wigs faces would've been priceless..lmao..

Read... comments...? Why? The title should be correct so you can just download the torrent file then download the actual file(s) then close the client before upping a 1+ ratio! Gosh, read comments...

    lol

This thread is a bust and I'll stick with the top torrent sites where you don't have to read through comments to know whether it's labeled correctly!

I've always thought that WIPO was a bullshit organization.
If someone bought and paid for something it is supposed to be theirs
I think cybersquatting is a legitimate business, and those people that typosquat are legitimate also. If you want a domain name then buy it. If I happen to own the one you want, then make me an offer I cannot refuse.
I think transferring any property from one individual to another by means of a governing body is communism at its finest.Ask Russell Boyd, he owned JuliaRoberts.com and all he wanted to do was meet her, but the C-word no talent ho sued him instead. Now I am sure there are plenty of girls out there named Julia Roberts, and if they had owned the site wouldn't they have a legitimate reason too? It should be first come first serve and if you are too stupid to put on an automatic renewal then F U . Pay the point...........

I don't get it. So the other guys still got the site, even though they neglected to renew it? That's not fair.
