New logo program promotes DRM free content

19 December 2007 16:39 by Rich "vurbal" Fiscus | 5 comments

New logo program promotes DRM free content Neuros, a company that specializes in digital recording devices that place no limitations on use of content, is hoping to start a movement to help consumers identify technology, like theirs, that doesn't include any DRM and adheres to open standards. The company has already trademarked the Unlocked Media brand, and is hoping to find a third party to administer it, eventually allowing any product with meets the program's guidelines to include the new logo.

DRM free music has arguably been the biggest news in online sales this year, with every major label either actively engaged in selling DRM-free music, or doing market research to determine its feasibility. At the same time, though, other industries, most notably film and television, are still resisting removal of DRM for downloaded media. Almost weekly there seems to be a new initiative, PR event, industry announcement, or legislation introduced in Congress that would place additional restrictions on the public's dwindling access to their own fair use rights.

According to Neuros CEO Joe Born, "Big Media is waging a strong campaign to convince our legislators to pair down our digital rights and outlaw many technologies to create Unlocked Media. We need a shorthand to rally citizens and fight back”

Amen to fighting back. If the mafiaa powers that be ever...and I do mean ever... manage to get rid of the "pirates" 'snickers here' what will they blame their dwindling sales on?

More power to these folks I will definitely be looking for their logo.

Yes this will show the big media companies consumers want what they want! Freedom with their own property.

Would be great once this is implemented to have one of those "surveys" done by industry "experts" (you know, the same ones who give us all of the "Bluray vs HD" and "How many people like purchasing from iTunes" stats) that shows how many people purchased unlocked hardware - and then translate that number to imply that consumers aren't as stupid as the industries think we are.

I'm waiting for a great portable device that uses FLAC and on-line retail music stores that sell FLAC or other lossless formats for the same price as MP3. And no DRM!

Thank you Neuros, for taking us one step closer to this.

I love the sound of this it reminds me of slysoft and what they do. I applaude their initiative and am eagerly waiting to see in what direction this wonderful idea is taken.

    Keep up the good work.
