40GB "ceramic white" PlayStation 3 coming to the US

Despite Sony's recent decision to discontinue the 20GB and 60GB models of its PlayStation 3 gaming console it seems they will be bringing a new model to North American.

An FCC filing has shown that Sony is planning to bring the "Ceramic White" 40GB model to North American stores but there is no official launch price or date known as of yet.

The filing, along with letters from Sony itself have confirmed that the white PS3 is ready for a North American launch. The model number, CECHH01 is different from the Japanese white PS3 but the model revision is more of a subtraction than any addition. The new model will come standard with a SIXAXIS wireless controller and not the DualShock 3.

There was no release date or launch price indicated by the filing or the Sony memos but the popular rumor is that an official announcement is coming next week and that sales of the new model can begin in early February. Other rumors have suggested that the black 40GB model will receive a price cut with the addition of the new white model to Sony's lineup but be reminded none of this information is verified.

honestly i'll believe it when it's on the shelves. They promised a white PSP at launch for that console and it didn't happen for 2+ years till they made the slims. [ + quote]

They have gotten production costs down to $400 for the ps3, so another price cut isn't out of the question. What I want to know is, why would the black 40g version get a price cut and the white version stay at $400? Unless there is a change we don't know about. [ + quote]

This is obviously a attempt by sony, praying that consumers will mistake a white ps3 for a xbox 360. since it is the only way they will ever be able to catch up with xbox. [ + quote]

Why can't these console makers create a division devoted entirely to custom cases, and allow you to buy a system with a custom case online? Obviously there is a market for it. Look how well XCM cases do. They can give people what they want without voiding the warranty....Oh yeah, they want people to void their warranty, so that they have to buy a new system when something happens to theirs. Otherwise they couldn't accuse people of tampering with the hardware. Let's see some Blue, Silver, Chrome and Crystal cases Sony - with some LED mods. [ + quote]

ya know if you stop and compare the ps3 to all other systems the ps3 has the outstading graphics, a good software support, it can update add new features with out buying a new system or accessories and the most expensive cd drive there's nothing wrong with this system at all it's just the company who has not a clue wtf they are doing. how in the F*** can you be making more systems with different colours and you cant even sell the best system the play station has the best game line ups from the psx to the ps2 but sony jumps the gun and ignores the small game line up on the ps3. this is why the xbox 360 is beating them when the xbox has the worst line when their best game is halo sony can do much better if they wait till their games come out this year they'll be at the top and if you notice the xbox is only doing well in the US hmmmmm sony your full of $#!% [ + quote]
