Onkyo drops support of HD DVD as well

23 February 2008 18:15 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 11 comments

Onkyo drops support of HD DVD as well The high-end electronics maker Onkyo has also announced that it will be ending support for HD DVD and stopping all production of HD DVD players.

Although a couple of companies have recently decided to continue their support for HD DVD players Onkyo clearly felt differently following Toshiba's recent decision to end support for HD DVD. "As Onkyo manufactures HD DVD players with core parts supplied by Toshiba," Onkyo's statement read, "it will be difficult for Onkyo to continue its further development and production of HD DVD players."

Any future HD products will be made for Blu-ray, says the company, but it will offer full support for all its HD DVD products including after-sales service.

we are so far past actually giving a ****

Free open source software = made by end users who want an application to work.... Commercial "pay for" software = made by software developers who want paying... see where I'm going with this?

Simple solution: Don't click on any thread with HD DVD or BluRay in the title.

Will there ever be a day where we will be able to rip Blueray and burn them on BDR? I dont want to jump to a new format if I ccan't be able to back it up.

Well I remember the bad old days when it was impossible to rip dvd until Norwegian John came along and now look at us ! ;)
granted the stakes are higher and more difficult now but the technology that makes copying more difficult also lends itself to those who work to defeat/circumvent it. In human history what one man invents another can copy - just takes time.

One thing I don't understand about the Onkyo statement is this

    Quote:
it will offer full support for all its HD DVD products including after-sales service.
I mean if they are completely stopping production, what else is there except for after sales service ? lol

I would suspect that they are talking about playback issues with certain discs. Doing firmware upgrades that allow the users to play the last of the HDDVD discs that are released (including the interactive features).

Well the upside to this is the fact that although making the players have stopped the support of their older hd dvd players will continue and that is a wise and mature move on Onkyo's side. Well done.
