NPD estimates two million will buy Blu-ray within six months

23 March 2008 18:13 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 16 comments

NPD estimates two million will buy Blu-ray within six months According to a survey conducted by the NPD Group during the week ending February 20th, millions are set to buy Blu-ray hardware within the next six months. Of all respondents, about 10.8% said they would buy a Blu-ray player within the next six months, helping to lead NPD to a prediction of two million player sales in that time frame.

The figure is based on the assumption that 25% of people who reveal intent to purchase something usually do so. So far, less than one million Blu-ray stand-alone players have been sold, but the numbers are considered higher because the multi-million selling PlayStation 3 (PS3) console has its own built in Blu-ray player.

While NPD did acknowledge that "intent to buy" figures are not enough to go on in the market, it noted that the increased interest is impressive considering this is the traditional down season for consumer electrionics. "This (increased interest) happened during a quiet part of the year after the Super Bowl, and there was bad weather for shopping," an NPD spokesman said.

i guess there trying to say, the intent to buy a blu-ray are far higher than those that will buy the blu-ray player.

The $600 US "economic stimulus" checks may help BluRay and the Hi-def market.

I agree, I see alot of the stimulus checks going towards electronics purchases, and im sure alot of those will be HDTVs and/or blu-ray players. I myself plan on putting my check towards a new tv and a blu-ray drive for my HTPC.

yeah im afraid alot of people will be putting their checks towards bills, rent, mortage payements etc. Thats why I don't think this stimulus plan will help the economy very much. The U.S. economy is in rough times right now and it looks to only get worse :(

Thats what happened with the last one they did a few years ago. The majority of people payed down bills and debt.

Initally if they use the bills to pay down mortgages, debts etc. its bad for the economy as money isn't being cycled around.

However, in the long run this is probably a smarter thing to do as it frees up cash later for bigger purchases such as cars etc.

On the NPD topic, I won't be one of the two million. The only time I will buy Blu is when the price of burners and media come down so I can backup my movies.

    Peace

Not on topic but my stimulus check will send me on a nice vacation to a beach in mexico while the dollar is still higher than the peso. On topic I agree that around $300 for a good machine and I would consider it.

I'm buying $600 worth of blu ray movies!!!! Well, maybe just $40....

My family will actually be getting a nice chunk of $$$ (wife and 2 kids), and It will be paying off our last credit card!! My taxes went up this year, gas prices are going to jump up, I have oil heat, the price of food is going to increase significantly. I don't want to have any more monthly payments for anything besides my car and mortgage.

I will most likely wait until the 2million make their buy, and then in a year or so I will consider getting a blueray player or whenever they put a reasonable price tag on it!
As to my $600 I am going to take to vegas!
