New PS2 model coming to Russia, India

5 July 2008 14:18 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 60 comments

New PS2 model coming to Russia, India Sony has announced that it will launching a fourth model of the PlayStation 2 in Europe and India on October 28th in an effort to "penetrate India's and Russia's burgeoning market for games."

Sony country manager Atindriya Bose says the launch will be simultaneous for the new markets and that the new model will be a slim model with built-in AC adapters.

"PS2 is an entry-level console, which helps first timers to enter the gaming zone,"
added Bose.

Bose also noted the new model will keep the same retail price of the outgoing PS2 models, older, fatter versions.

"We feel PS2 has the potential to penetrate further into the Indian and Russian markets. Console gaming is in its nascent stage in India. These are untapped markets and are new to the gaming world, hence we have no plans to phase out PS2 anytime soon,"
he added.

Wont the latest decision impact PS3 sales? "We do not market it as a PS2 or PS3. It is the experience of the PS that we market. PS3 is for the next generation. People who are first timers in the gaming market want to pick up PS2 and experience that, before upgrading to PS3," Bose finished.

    Hi ;)

It was only a couple of years ago sony released the ps1 in Ghana.

I hope they aren't expecting massive game sales in these two hotbeds of game piracy, or is it just an excuse to get these governments into the "piracy is killing technology" BS and force anti fair use laws across the world. Lots of the larger cracking groups are based in India and Russia, or that is where their FTP servers are hosted.

    I'm watching.

And sometimes his info on other thing was not half bad.

im not trying to tell the Mods Or Staff how to do there job. but i think you did go a bit Over Board on that.

    Anywho...

Now as for the topic at hand, I agree these guys might be the number 1 country for piracy. but handing out old technology now doesn't make it anymore right. the way i see it, its a form of Consumer discrimination.

Sadly yes. That's what it boils down to. (with LOCO's monetary amendment of course)

And Varnull's comment about flogging a dead horse is right on. Only, it seems like their flogging the dead horse with a wet herring.

Surely whatever currency is paid in the shops (or not.. most Russians and Indians who want a ps2 have imported one on the cheap years ago) the {imagined} game sales lost to piracy will be crowed about in the good old bog paper $$$

It's probably cheaper to wipe your backside with US $$ these days than buy toilet paper.. any Yanks care to comment on the mishandling of one of the strongest economies in the world by a bunch of greedy and inept meat packing glitterati? The word "junta" isn't strong enough for the state of US politics today.

iluvendo, you got ripped off if you need free latex patches.

Watch out.. the vulcanising solvent type glue supplied with the latex/neoprene puncture repair patches will dissolve PVC dolls. You need a water based latex solution or patches specifically made for pvc.. the kind for paddling pools seems good.. see here

If you had you'd have seen my negative feedback.

I ordered the blow up doll and got a rubber chicken with a photocopied picture of LOCO's face.

    I'm still upset.

I'm still confused by the "necessity" here. I still think it's a silly power play and a large gamble for $ony in general.

Interestingly.. this is being blown up by sony pundits as a "new product launch".. I found this..

    http://www.petitiononline.com/ps2ind03/petition.html

Which makes a few holes in the story, and adds a new dimension to the spin. So it isn't such a new thing then.. they have had it before.

    Interesting comments here http://www.thinktechno.com/2008/07/03/so...nd-europe-soon/

Oh.. I think we have a little leeway for OT banter on this one ;) We learned how to repair paddling pools and beachballs (and blow up loco dolls) which is always useful with summer and kids and holiday accidents in the very near future. Hint:: don't smoke a spliff while relaxing in the kids pool.. the bombs burn holes leading to a sinking feeling and a soggy lawn ;)

India is a country of contrasts. As one of the asian tiger economies great things are going to happen in the next 10 years. BUT.. as it stands now the image of the country is of large numbers of nearly destitute people being exploited to provide cheap goods for western markets. This may give employment but obviously is only a one sided publicity which isn't a fair view of the situation. Large numbers must work in call centres, judging by the number of times we speak to Indians when calling a bank or customer service centre.

Lets see how sony get on with this. Interesting the ps3 isn't being advertised, mind you.. I haven't seen many media adverts for it here either, apart from the odd game which is available on all the others... MS push the 360 and almost every hour you will see Wii games or features promoted... Very strange.
