Sony sets their sights on number 2

15 July 2008 10:55 by Rich "vurbal" Fiscus | 36 comments

Sony sets their sights on number 2 The PS3 is gaining ground on the Xbox 360. Through last year Microsoft's console outsold Sony's. With a year's head start in sales, a lower price, and the success of Xbox Live there were many reasons to pick the Xbox 360 over the PS3. That's changed this year, with sales figures through May making the PS3 the number two seller of 2008, still trailing the Nintendo Wii.

The PS3 has had significant obstacles to overcome, including a head start of an entire year for the Xbox 360 and a significant price advantage for both the Microsoft and Nintendo consoles. They still trail the Xbox 360 in total sales, but the gap is closing.

If you believe Sony's Howard Stringer the competition with Microsoft is all that counts since he claims the Wii is "more of an expensive niche game device," and not a competitor for the PS3. He pointed out that the PS3 is "still the best way to buy a Blu-ray player.''

And he's certainly correct that it leads that market, but it seems foolish to believe he isn't disappoiinted about coming in second in the console market, especially considering that the video game market is growing while home video remains stagnant.

Besides that the Blu-ray market is still fairly new. In order to achieve the success Sony is betting on there will have to be low priced players dominating the market that the PS3 won't be able to compete with.

Well, it's likely that if devs just concentrate on one version of the game rather than 2, the outcome will be better. If they dev only one version and then port it, someone still gets ripped off...I'm talking about games that used to be exclusives here.

IMO a lot depends upon whether you have a HD TV. Having just upgraded my home cinema to HD I wanted a HD games system and HD movie source. The solution was Sony's PS3, which replaced both my existing game console (PS2) and DVD player, freeing up space in my living room. This is where the xbox fails (nb: a lot of my friends own an xbox) it is only a good games console, and DVD player (not HD DVD/ Bluray player).

For me, choice of TV dictated choice of cosole, and PS3 was the winner. A lot has been said about now being the time for PS3 to shine but personally, there is already enough content to justify my recent choice of console.

Looking at the corporate mentality of less for more i think they would turn around dev time and put out games faster 0-o

Playstation has much more loyal funs than 360, and with MS strategy 360 will get what xbox got from PS2.

..and Truth to be said, it still lacks from 1st class titles.

Um...A PS3 or a 360Elite or both combined costs less than the 2GFX cards and the 4gb or RAM that you need to play the same game to a PC.

the ps3 has way more features than the 360 can you access the hard drive of a 360 half way accross the world or can you stream your media to another divice through wifi the ps3 packs a bigger punch you can even put your old ps1 games into it and play it around the house or in the tub what a world we live in

Not really a waste to get a ps3. FF13 will most likely be a 3 or 4 disc set on Xbox and/or have poorer graphical presentation. Because 360 still only uses standard DVD's. the PS3 version of FF13 will all fit on one disc and obviously look much better. since BD discs hold 6 times more data than standard DVD's.

That allows devs to pack much nicer looking, more detailed games on the PS3's versions.
Thats not true, when you design a game and the game engine, it all relatively Stays the same graphics, sound, and options, Xbox360 more than likely will have Multiple discs, Maybe 3 at the most.

But everything else stays the same. DVD-18 is still a relatively large format for the old dvd technology.

    (@fergus100)

Yeah, you can stream to and from it, and yes you can access the Harddrive, the catch is they only want you to stream with certified devices. And access to the hard drive is somewhat restricting.

the only thing stopping people from doing it, is there accounts being banned, also possible to get around that.

it takes work but its possible.

Well sony seems to have a better lineup of games for 2008 than microsoft. Here is a link that may be of some interest.

Does anyone know any other big releases for the PS3 and xbox360 scheduled for this year? Please list.

WTF Sony??

I cant figure out why people keep thinking that the Xbox360 is holding back the graphics on games that are being released multi-platform. Hint..Hint..when comparing the blueray and dvd for the two consoles think about it in another way. The blueray for the ps3 is like having a 50 gallon gas tank while the xbox360 with dvd has a 9 gallon tank. You would have to make a lot more stops to fill up for gas with the xbox 360,(changing the disc), but as far as the majority of the exclusives games, and multiplatform games have shown graphic wise the engines are running at the same top speed. Right now there is not much diff in graphics between the PS3 and Xbox360. They are the same with minor differences here and there. Developers did not hold back on GTA IV and Devil May Cry 4 because it was released multiplatform. If that is the case the PS3 exclusives,(GAMES DEVS MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE PS3) should all be way better looking games than the multiplatform games released for the PS3.

P.S. Graphics on the PS3 should outshine the xbox 360 if the
devs figure out how to get as much out of the cell processor
as Sony claims it is capable of. But then again who truely knows, I have seen a v-8 corvette that couldnot beat a V-6 buick grand national. The bigger engine doesnot always win the race. We will just have to wait and see.

you don't need 4GB of ramm unless you are running vister, and 2 GFX cards are redundant unless you have a full HD setup that costs as much as a good used car......

with a 2 core PC of 2.8+Ghz 2 GB of ramm and a newer 200$ vid card you can run anything on medium.

what? how come using 3 or 4 DVD in xbox 360 will make it have poor graphic?

hardware-wise xbox360 have faster graphic chip, so it can deliver betther graphic.

some PC games packed in multiple disc and the graphic is as good as single disc.

i really dont understand, what the connection between using multiple disc Vs single BR Disc in Graphic Quality.

btw xbox 360 Fall 2008 update will have "option to install game to HDD, fully". so those who have no patients waiting for a few secs loading, can install their game and have no loading.

I dunno everything I read says the PS3 has the better graphics but lesser ability to handle sheer data, the 360 is hampered by data space, also the 360 can't use multi discs since most of its more popular games offer multi player and MS wont let devs use multi discs.

If MS gets BR games the difference in over all qaulity will be less noticeable, the PS3 has almost twice as much power hidden in ti but ti will take years to get the optimizations worked out to where there is a huge difference in games by then if MS has BR games then MS will break even with the PS3 to the point the only difference is a couple games and the HDD issue.
jutsu (Junior Member) 16 July 2008 3:48 Send private message to this user
    hmm,
why MS disallow multidisc for multiplayer?

game dev can make game in 2 DVD type.

Singeplayer disc (it can have multiple dvd).
Multiplayer Disc (only have 1 dvd).

fitting multiplayer maps/games in 1 dvd wont be a problem. because there wont be any HD Video/FMV and a lot less voice files.

create it like CoD2 PC, or CoD4 PC.
its basically have 2 different .EXE for SP and MP
the SP have its own data files
the MP also have its own data files.

i already deleted all my CoD2 Singelpayer files on my HDD. so it only can play multiplay but i get more free-space :D

hmm..been a year and a half and i still didnt get my next gen console...i dont really care about the graphics that much..so ive been thinking of buying a Wii cuz it doesnt cost too much and has a very nice line of games overall and its hacked so i dun have to pay the too-high prices..and the same goes for 360 only because of the fact i can fry eggs on it and what ive been hearing about the tiny warranty period that pretty much stopped me there..and then theres the PS3..blueray-not a big wow..games lineup that can you can simply pick up and play without dying 50 times before you get the drill-not too many (kill me,i hate shooter games except maybe metroid UT and halo).
and for all this godam long no1'd been able to hack it and even if they do id have to get a BD burner to use that fact..so like most people currently around the world (as the data shows) im leaning towards a Wii..my only doubt is how long it will last before it'll start collecting dust like my old gamecube is..

gaming has moved on you can play online with your freinds if not you can invite them over end play split screen halo online witch is alot of fun and the games are like 25 gigabites upwards it would take a mamoth broadband connection to download it in any reasonable length of time its not going to happen like the psp maby a few homebrew apps for the ps3 but noting more than that

No. Every 360 is prone to the same failure rate. http://www.fastsilicon.com/latest-news/m...-defective.html Granted that link is old but all models after that still fail so they are included. Definitely get an extended warranty when you buy one.

Ya its really more a design flaw than a flawed manufacture job, newer units have a lower fail rate...but still higher than the industry standard of 3-5%, MS is really dragging its arse but then it always dose.
