Warner wants more money from music games

8 August 2008 14:13 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 13 comments

Warner wants more money from music games Warner Music Group has said that they want more money to paid out to have their songs licensed in music-based video games like the blockbusters "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band."

Warner is the world's third-largest music company, behind Universal and Sony, and Chief Executive Edgar Bronfman compared the games to "MTV's launch 25 years ago or Apple Inc's iPod launch five years ago," and added "the amount being paid to the music industry, even though their games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small."

If Bronfman has his way, downloadable content may become more expensive, most likely slowing down a great source of revenue for the music industry. Thanks to its Guitar Hero franchise, Activision reported last month that sales were up 32 percent year on year and Harmonix also recently announced that over 12 million downloadable tracks for Rock Band had been sold.

ah well, here goes the record industry looking after the artists again!

i thought that any publicity through games would be a great source of new consumers for the industry, just like radio but never mind, i must be a complete idiot.

Yep, here we go again. Of course, where's the value of "playing along" for a few more dollars than buying the song off iTunes? Then again, ultimately, this is the same greedy corporation that took the Blu-Ray paycheck. (Yeah I know, music, movies, entertainment divisions, but still all the same pigs in the end.)

They want more money.. why don't they deal with the Chinese new hd disk technology and then get another huge payout from the BD cartel?

It will only work if enough people buy it at the newly inflated price,if demand makes a significant drop so will price, however i don't see what the increase is going to be,so it would seem a few are jump'n the gun so i might as well join in too,my guess there will be an increase by a few cents, then again what's everyone complain'n about when was the last time any of you bought any music....thought as much ..nough said

This will make or break my decision to buy Rock Band. I will hold off and wait. I will not buy it if the price increases for downloadable packs. Just on principle.
