Datel sued over PSP-3000 'hacking tool'

17 January 2009 5:10 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 9 comments

Datel sued over PSP-3000 'hacking tool' Sony Europe has sued the UK-based company Datel over an accessory that allows gamers to run pirated games and homebrew software on their PSP-3000.

Unlike previous hardware models, the PSP-3000 has been harder to crack and Datel began advertising the Lite Blue Tool last month which is a battery-attached way to open the PSP up to homebrew.

The accessory has not been released yet, and Datel noted "that orders for the Lite Blue Tool could not be fulfilled due to legal action by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe".

Sony added however, that PSP hacking has been 'trending downwards' since the release of the 3000 model late last year.

Im not going into all the Dark_AleX or Miriam back story (arguments), but which ever way you look at it a release is just round the corner.

It would appear the "Little Blue Tool" has gone on sale?:

I was not aware Homebrew was illegal...just because one can hack a image to get it to run with the device is a non starter, not to mention that its easy to hack he damn thing with free tools so...sony.....take your head out of your ass.

Meh sicne they started to lock out user coes from thier game enhancers they need to die...or revamp thier business model, I wondr how a server based cheat enhancer would work, IE you can send in codes they get verified to be non harmfull codes and you can use them. hell they can sell 0day codes as DLC I mean its a seemling perfect setup all MS and sony would ahve to do is ok it and help them find codes to black list to keep the online store and MP games "safe", they could also sale MP specific code sets and a separate MP specific game enhancer that changes gameplay to add life and flavor to MP games..

Not when the media mafia has bought laws to say protection circumvention is illicit.... its no longer a gray area in the US and UK what I am hinting at.

I haven't hacked my PSP, yet, but I have altered my DS and Wii to allow me to run home brew software. My assumption of why Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft doesn't want us to be running non-LICENSED software is because then they aren't making any money off of it. Microsoft lost LOTS of money selling the 360 for the price they did.... but made that money back (after halo 3 came out) by making a profit on each game sold. I installed Linux on my DS and was able to surf the Internet... and not have to pay the money to purchase Opera for the DS. Ironically enough, Sony allowed me to install Linux on my PS3 and prevent me from purchasing Windows or a PC... (which cost a LOT more than Opera+add-on pack for the DS)
