doubleTwist hits Macs-- Windows version coming soon

25 February 2009 14:42 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 2 comments

doubleTwist hits Macs-- Windows version coming soon DoubleTwist, the longtime project of the infamous Jon “DVD Jon” Lech Johansen, is finally available for download for Mac users.

DoubleTwist doubles (sorry for the pun) as an online service and an offline desktop application that can access, convert and transfer most media you throw at it. Plug in a supported device and the program will convert the file for that device and sync it automatically. You can also one-click upload to video and photo sharing sites such as YouTube, Flickr and Facebook.

Users can share and stream videos with other doubleTwist users and videos can be streamed from the service's own Web site or right from inside the app.

There is no support for DRM-restricted files, and no way to strip the DRM but fortunately most labels and online stores are selling their music without DRM these days.

According to a Forum post over at doubleTwist:
Which devices do you support?
doubleTwist enables you to sync with:

* BlackBerry Curve, Pearl, Storm and Flip
* Sony PSP
* INQ1 by INQ
* G1 and Android phones
* Nokia N & E Series phones, including the N95, E61i, E62, and many others
* Sony Ericsson Walkman & Cybershot phones
* Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0 platform (e.g. Treo, HTC, Palm) -- currently PC only, will be available for the Mac very soon
* LG Viewty, LG Voyager and Shine
* Motorola (V9 and V3xx) and most Razr phones
* Zune (sync is via Zune software) -- PC only
* Sansa e200 series and Sansa View
* Amazon Kindle
* iPhone -- currently PC only, stay tuned for Mac support!
* iPod -- currently PC only, stay tuned for Mac support!
* Nintendo DSi -- coming soon!
* Most digital cameras
* Most flash-memory-based camcorders are supported

The official website also notes that: "doubleTwist for Windows is currently in private beta. It will be publicly available in March."
