New iPhone to have 3.2-megapixel camera?

According to Taiwanese manufacturers, the next version of the iPhone will have a 3.2-megapixel camera, an upgrade from the current model's 2.0-megapixel camera.

The sources claim that OmniVision has received orders for 3.2-megapixel CMOS sensors that are intended for upcoming iPhones, and add that Aptina and STMicroelectronics are also competing for the orders.

The reports also claim that OmniVision has secured orders to produce 5.2-megapixel sensors for Apple, although it is unclear what device they will be used in. The sources say the end product is expected to launch in Q3 2009 however.

Apple has been rumored to be working on netbooks, new iPods, and a new iPhone, all of which could use the sensors.

with such a small lens on the iphone i cant see this making a large difference in picture quality just file size. [ + quote]

Sigh I'm officially done with buying products when they first come out. Sure I'm happy that the iPhone is getting some upgrades, but I'm disappointed that despite all the money I've handed to Apple that I won't be able to get the upgrades. [ + quote]

Hi dvdback. There typo on article. 'senors' I think it should be 'sensors' ? BTT. If this is the next iphone, isnt there already many cellphone with 5MP ? Like on SE or nokia? [ + quote]

I sure even the design freaks at Apple could stomach putting a bigger lens on the back of the iphone (though size isn't everything). The bigger problem is the lack of flash or light, which means that pictures need to be taken in bright daylight. Anything in even remotely low light (a cloudy day for example) results in such long shutter speeds that you need to be rock steady to get a decent picture. [ + quote]
