RealDVD lawsuit finally gets court date

In September, RealNetworks launched RealDVD, a $30 USD software application that allows users to make a copy of their DVDs and it play it back on their PCs.

By October however, the company had been sued by the MPAA and the Hollywood studios, and the software was taken down pending the verdict of the lawsuit.

Real finally has a chance to defend its product though, as a judge has set an April 24th court date, says CEO Rob Glaser.

Glaser believes the company will win the suit, as users �have the right to make a secure copy� that cannot be shared with anyone but those using the computer that made the copy. Let's see if the judge agrees.

My guess is, they don't want people ripping Netflix/store rentals into their collection, thus building a collection on the cheap. Moneyyyy, it's a gas!! [ + quote]

The industry wants it to be like all others. You break a pencil, purchase a new one. You break a microwave, purchase a new one etc. You break a dvd guess what, they will give the story that the industry will be troubled if the customer is allowed to just make a copy and they get nothing. It's all crud but they will spend the money to make the citizens pay for the same thing more than one time. [ + quote]
