Sony has said that it will be bringing the music and video download service VidZone to European PlayStation 3 consoles this summer, allowing users to watch music videos at their leisure, for free.
VidZone currently runs the service from their own independent website, and is has deals with Sony BMG, EMI and over four thousand independent labels. The service on the PS3 will be ad-supported and will allow gamers to stream over 25,000 music videos and "behind-the-scenes commentaries."
"VidZone is not just about giving music fans access to thousands of music videos, but offering a completely interactive and personalised music experience," added VidZone CTO Michael Russo.
The VidZone application will be made available through the PS3’s Xross Media Bar (XMB) with a later firmware update and will allow users to create playlists, save a video library, or select any individual video from the catalog.
"Music has always been popular on PS3 and now VidZone is set to transform the way we view music videos by letting you completely tailor your experience and is just one more reason for PS3 to be the most valued player in your living room," concluded Isabelle Tomatis, hardware and platforms marketing manager at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
The app will be available in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, German, Spain and Australia.

What a pain...sony keeps releasing stuff for foreign countries only. I now have about a dozen foreign PSN accounts because of this. The USA market pays for the systems & games just as much as the Japan, Taiwan, Australian, and English markets...yet we are always excluded from these features.

lol @ how wrong you are mate!
How much does and has a PS3 cost you over in the states?
I guarantee that UK or europeon prices have been no where near what it costs people in the US to buy one.
Europe ALWAYS gets shafted on price and up until very recently has had to put up with Japan and then the US getting games first!
So Europe gets a new toy to play with before the US, I know what most people would prefer between a cheaper console and a music service!

While i generally agree with Stu dent with regards the price, having bought my PS3 (over 12 months ago) i'm not all that interested in how much it now cost. What is good is to see further development of the platform as a home media centre (the true power of the unit). And what they do for the UK i'm sure they eventually will do for other regions. That said, doesn't the US have a movie download service within the PlayStation Store? That would be much better IMO and something which needs implementing in every region if PSN is to compete with Xbox Live.

The "PAIN" I speak of is that they go through all the trouble to devolop these toys, and then only release them to part of their audience. If you want to feel my pain, login to the Taiwan PSHOME server and look at the central plaza & game space, you will see what I mean.

"as a home media centre (the true power of the unit)"
Power is not the word I would use to describe the PS3’s media capabilities. Lacking is a better word if you ask me. Even the most basic media centers can stream content over ones home network, something the PS3 does not do.

@sundance
Ever heard of Tversity? Or many of the other media server programs out there? Streaming over home network is a breeze to do! Research before you post, buddy.
