Guide: Updating your T-Mobile G1 to Android 1.5 (Cupcake) manually

Here is a guide for how to update your T-Mobile G1 to the new and hotly anticipated Android 1.5 (Cupcake) firmware update, manually, instead of waiting for the OTA (over the air) update that could take weeks to fully rollout. Be noted this works for other RCs as well, but for this guide I will specifically be using the new 1.5 update. Please also note if you phone is rooted (we will have guide for that up soon), then this will remove your rooted firmware, un-rooting your phone.

First off, you will need to download the update from the following link: Official US Android 1.5 update.

If you are from a different nation that offers the phone, please visit here for your update: Android 1.5 (Non-US)

Once you have downloaded the update, rename the archive to update from signed-kila... so that the full archive is intact (unpacked) and is Update.zip.

The next part is important. Insert your microSD card into the slot in your G1 and plug the phone into your computer. Your phone will give you a notification that you are now connected via USB so open the notification and select Mount. Your SD card will now be accessible via the computer as a removable drive. Move the Update.zip to the SD card, in the main directory, not within a folder.

For the next step, turn off your phone. When rebooting, hold Power and Home and you will restart in Recovery Mode. There should be a small logo on your screen that shows the phone next to a large exclamation point.

Hit Alt+L to get to the Boot Menu.

Hit Alt+S to begin the update process off the SD card.

When the process is complete, reboot as instructed on the screen and the update will complete. You are done!

Application-defined hardware requirements

Applications can now use a new element in their manifest files, to indicate to the Android system what hardware features they require in order to function properly. For example, an application might use the element to specify that it requires a physical keyboard or a particular navigation device, such as a trackball. Prior to installing the application, the Android system checks the attributes defined for the element and allows the installation to continue only if the required hardware is present.

Speech recognition framework

I'm getting a Google 503 Service error when I try to click onto the link. Nevermind, I got it. I think too many people are overloading the d/l server that it's causing errors. [ + quote] This message has been edited since posting. Last time this message was edited on 31 May 2009 23:44

Why do i get the Error message? Installing from sdcard.... Finding update package.... Opening update package.... E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory) Installation aborted. Press Home+Back to reboot [ + quote]

WHY AM I GETTING THIS ERROR MESSAGE: INSTALING FROM SD CARD... fINDING UPDATE PACKAGE... OPENING UPDATE PACKAGE... VERIFYING UPDATE PACKAGE... E:NO SIGNATURE (413 FILES) E:VERIFICATION FAILED INSTALATION ABORTED. PRESS HOME+BACK TO REBOOT I DID WHAT THE INSTRUCTIONS SAID. I PUT TO THE ROOT OF MY SD CARD. I NAMED IT " Update " i did not put .zip could it be because my phone is rooted? is this JF 1.5 update. im lost lmao please help someone i need this update like a crackhead needs crack its a must please anyone thanks [ + quote]
